Position Title: Medical Laboratory Technologist
Location: Sante Fe, New Mexico
Manager: Angela Suafoa
Position Summary
This Medical Laboratory Technologist position is in the Laboratory at the Sante Fe Indian Health Center located in Sante Fe, New Mexico. The purpose of this position is to conduct professional laboratory services for the Clinical Laboratory. This role requires the Technologist to perform phlebotomy duties and process laboratory patient samples on pediatric, geriatric, adolescent, and adult patients.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
· Employee performs medical technologist duties and manages patient's needs as identified by the Service Unit.
· Employee performs a variety of standardized routine and specialized procedures in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Serology (Covid-19), Urinalysis, Coagulation, Phlebotomy, Specimen, and dispatch requirements.
· Must be capable of performing phlebotomy on various age groups: (infants to geriatric ages) and familiar with requirements and equipment for each age group, such as finger sticks, heel sticks and venipuncture with different needle gauges. Withdraws appropriate quantities of blood by venipuncture, capillary, and/or arterial puncture as required. Collect appropriate specimen for lab testing according to established lab procedures.
· Must be able to work independently without supervision after successful completion of competence.
· Employee performs start up, shut-down, daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly preventative maintenance procedures on analyzers and other testing procedures on instrumentation in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Serology (Cepheid) as assigned or instructed.
· Performs Quality Control procedures on analyzers and manual test methods as required; performs semi-annual Calibration verification studies and Method Comparison Studies as assigned; analyzes and monitors significant trends, troubleshoots analyzer problems. Identifies and recognizes technical and instrumental causes of problems.
· Assures preparation of tests for all patients, including performing the test calibrations and calibration verification studies as needed. Checks specimens, prepares reagents, and maintains adequate supplies. Electronically enters, or writes clinical reports and descriptions of laboratory care
· Examines all patient’s lab work, reviews all testing (lab) and requests or performs diagnostic tests and refers tests to internal and external Laboratory facilities. Completes all tests requested by physicians and refers out when needed. Makes note of all assessments and records results. Reports results to appropriate individuals, calls critical values to appropriate individuals and recognizes the need for timely reporting of laboratory data and shipment of products and specimens.
· Other duties as required
Education & Experience Requirements
· Employee must have a valid ASCP or equivalent MT/MLT license and maintain active certification through the duration of employment
· Employee must have current BLS certification throughout the duration of this contract.
Working Conditions/Working Environment/Physical Demands
· Work Shift: Rotating 8 hour shifts as needed Sunday through Saturday. There will be a 30 minute unpaid meal break included in the schedule.
· Walking, sitting, kneeling, bending and periodic standing required: ability to lift approximately 10-15 pounds (i.e. boxes, equipment)
· Work in laboratory involves repetitive motions more than 1/3 of time.
· Ability to speak, understand, write English fluently to effectively communicate with patients and other health care workers, and shall be respectful to the local, American Indian and Alaska Native culture.
