The Office of Community Safety seeks a full-time Media Relations Coordinator to support strategic communications and media relations efforts.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
  • Work with the City Attorney Office, and the City Clerk's Office, to manage the release of public information as required by the Minnesota Data Practices Act.
  • Respond to media inquiries regarding City actions, including those involving potentially controversial matters, and release information to the media on breaking stories.
  • Brief and advise City staff, including enterprise leadership, who will speak to the media and provide them with talking points, fact sheets and other preparatory materials.
  • Manage media events and produce written and visual materials, including news releases, fact sheets and web content.
  • Work across the enterprise, including with City leadership, to develop and implement communications plans and strategies to effectively communicate with appropriate partners and stakeholders.
  • Deliver briefings with enterprise leadership regarding media activities.
  • Consult with enterprise leadership, including mayor, council members and department heads, on reporter questions, and other media relations matters.
  • Respond to media inquiries regarding breaking news, and other matters, including on weekends and other times outside of normal business hours.
  • Train leadership in speaking to the media and other media related matters.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, or Broadcasting
Minimum Experience
Five or more years of experience working for or with the media, managing projects and considerable experience creating communications for a variety of different audiences. Prior writing and editing experience is required. Completion of emergency incident response is highly desirable
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Desirable Qualifications -- Language
Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Oromo, Hmong, Vietnamese and/or Lao.
Desirable Qualifications -- Cultural Competency
Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
Selection Process
The selection process will consist of a rating of relevant education and experience. It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.
Union Representation
This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Professional Employees Association (MPEA) .
Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse communities.
  • Experience launching a new program, including building brand awareness through a coordinated communication campaign.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting work communicating to communities who are not reached through traditional communications platforms or methods, including diverse cultural communities, marginalized communities, and/or communities negatively impacted by systemic inequities.
  • Organizational leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of digital marketing resources, including social media and web, for conveying information to the public and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytic and organizing skills.
  • Working knowledge of website development and ability to lead a team to update and/or build a website, write website content, and ensure websites are accessible and relevant for community.
  • Strong and demonstrated knowledge of media relations, strategic communications campaign planning, public information campaign planning and marketing.
  • Knowledge of Public Sector and community safety institutions, systems, and stakeholders a plus.
  • Experience connecting communications strategies and community engagement strategies to achieve campaign goal.
  • Interviewing and writing skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Past experience with work intended to reach people who are part of historically marginalized communities, communities that have historically been negatively impacted by systemic inequities, and/or or communities that are disproportionately impacted by the burden of violence and/or the justice system is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working effectively with a broad range of stakeholders including young people, community residents, community-based service providers, representatives from other government jurisdictions, staff from a diverse of array of other City departments, and elected officials and their staff.
