The Instruments Group is passionate about development of state-of-the-art inspection and metrology equipment used in production and research and development environments. Organization is globally located in US, China, and Singapore. We provide critical cost-effective solutions for power electronics, LED, communications, automotive, data storage, and other related nanoelectronics and materials science applications. We partner with our customers to provide state of the art hardware and software to improve yield and lower overall production costs by supplying world-leading inspection, metrology and review systems. In addition to developing valuable product solutions, the group provides support to customers to achieve performance entitlement through sharing and implementation of application BKMs (Best Known Methods).

Job Description/Preferred Qualifications

We are looking to hire a Mechanical design engineer. The Mechanical Design Engineer will be an integral part of the Nano Indenter system design team. You will assume responsibility for the next generation design, fabrication, and interaction with vendors. Will take projects from design concept, through prototype and testing, to manufacturing build, and will detail and address all issues thru through the product phases.

  • Design parts and subsystems for next generation system. Take ownership of the process, including requirements, concept, design, testing, BOM structure, and scheduling.
  • Mechanical design principles: kinematic design, flexures, environmental effects.
  • Conduct various analysis, such as thermal, vibration and FEA modeling, conceptual and detailed design using SolidWorks, detailed drawings, design review presentations, procurement of prototype parts, system integration, prototype testing, and handoff to manufacturing. These tasks will require working with other engineering groups such as Systems engineers and Manufacturing engineers to ensure detailed integration and subsystem test or system level. Develop the required supporting documentation, such as assembly and test procedures.
  • Operational and non-operational environmental and transportation testing including thermal, vibration, and shock.
  • Vendor management: component fabrication, manufacturing process transfer, qualification.
  • Generate detailed designs for mechanical parts/subsystems and possess analytical skills to evaluate feasibility of designs.
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals such as mechanics, thermodynamics, and structural analysis.
  • Carry out assembly, testing and troubleshooting at prototype and coordinated system levels.
  • Experience designing mechanical modules, custom fixtures and tooling leading to successful introduction into manufacturing.
  • Perform first order hand calculations and computer simulations to verify functionality of parts and mechanism. Work multi-functionally and drive implementation of design standard methodologies into product design that meets the requirements and specifications, SEMI standards, as well as adhering to manufacturability and reasonable cost.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Thermal analysis: heat transfer, temperature gradients, thermal transients, thermo-elastic analysis.
  • Knowledge manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding and plating.
  • Experience in detail drawing creation and application and interpretation of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5) and welding (AWS A2.4) symbols.
  • Structural analysis: finite element analysis, creep and stress relaxation, modal analysis.
  • Bachelor’s degree with +5 years’ work experience, OR Master’s degree with +3 years’ work experience, OR PhD with 0 years’ work experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and plastics.
  • Tolerance analysis, GD&T, error budgeting, flow up and flow down of requirements.
