The Medical Surgical Group strives to enable earlier diagnosis, better treatment, faster complication-free recovery, and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions. The Surgical Operating Unit set the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) by creating innovative surgical products and services that focus on obesity and diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, abdominal wall, pelvic region, and the head and neck.
A Day in the Life
This position is in Boston, MA. As a Mechanical Design Engineer I, you will join a team of mechanical, electrical and software engineers responsible for the released product engineering (RPE) of multiple subsystems across Medtronic’s Robotic Surgery Technology platform.
You will have responsibility for:

· Acting as first point of contact for Released Product Engineering in order to:

· Provide rapid response for line-down issues.

· Coordinate between R&D subject matter experts and other Released Product Engineering counterparts.

· Maintain electromechanical products and capital medical equipment.

· Participate in hardware deliverables of the Change Development Process for capital medical equipment.

· Determine change impact on mechanical/electromechanical design and document rationales.

· Maintain bill of materials using product lifecycle management software (Agile)

· Designing electromechanical medical devices and subsystems with 3D CAD Software.

· Develop detail drawings and tolerance stacks using Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME standards.

· Integrating electronic components with mechanical designs, including design for EMC

· Preparing documentation in accordance with relevant internal SOPs and Design Control.

· Interacting with suppliers, participating in DFM and DFA processes to assess component and assembly manufacturability.

· Participating in risk assessments such as FMEAs and follow up on generated recommendations.

· Writing engineering reports and creating presentations as required to document and communicate results.

· Instituting design changes based on internal and external customer feedback.

· Collaborating with peers to manage the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements.

· Meeting formal product requirements, including IEC 60601-1 3rd Edition

· Gathering input for requirements generation and management

· Performing engineering testing in order to demonstrate compliance to requirements

  • Participate in cross functional design and drawing reviews

Must haves: Minimum requirements :

  • A Bachelor’s in Engineering (or equivalent).

Nice to haves:

· An advanced degree, 0-1 years of relevant industry experience (medical device experience strongly preferred), Knowledge of electromechanical/mechatronic systems.

· Experience with; Detail Drawings , GD&T, 3D CAD software (Creo / Pro Engineer preferred), Ansys, CE-Tol, Minitab, MathCad, MATLAB, Simulink, LabView

· Prior internships or familiarity with systems engineering, robotics and mechanical design strongly preferred.

Working Conditions:

Standard office setting in Boston, MA. Some limited travel may be required, including travel to North Haven, CT office.
