MECHANIC III (FULL-TIME)

Rate of Pay: $31.37 / Hour (2023 Wage Scale)

Scheduled increases at 6 months AND 12 months.

JOB DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (EV), trucks, and other Township vehicles and equipment.

The employee receives general supervision from a departmental supervisor, work is reviewed through discussion and observation of the efficiency of equipment in operation. The employee is responsible for making some technical decisions and for developing basic work methods and procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Note: These examples are intended merely as illustrations of the various types of work performed).

  • Relines and adjusts brakes and makes repairs to hydraulic systems.
  • Operates a variety of power-operated and hand tools used in mechanical and maintenance work.
  • Inspects bodies and replaces body units and fixtures.
  • Repairs or replaces minor assemblies and sub-assemblies on various types of equipment.
  • Inspects equipment, analyzes trouble, and plans and implements repair operations.
  • Performs a wide variety of mechanical repair work involving light, heavy, hybrid/EV, special automotive, firefighting, and other equipment including trucks, tractors, trailers, air compressors, pumps, grounds maintenance equipment, and diesel equipment.
  • Performs motor tune-ups on all types of equipment.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Performs miscellaneous painting, repair, and maintenance work.
  • Performs front-end alignments, balances wheels, repairs tires, and replaces shock absorbers.
  • Performs bumping, painting, drilling, bolting, welding, brazing, soldering, and cutting operations.
  • Makes repairs to the electrical systems of automotive, and power-driven equipment.
  • Performs road services on equipment as required.
  • Adjusts, repairs, and replaces parts in engines, transmissions, differential, and other equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Skill in the use of tools and in the operation of machines and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive, firefighting, and related equipment.
  • Hybrid/EV vehicle repair certification preferred, or necessary working knowledge required to obtain Hybrid/EV vehicle repair training and certification
  • Skill in diagnosing defective automotive, firefighting, and related equipment.
  • Some experience as an automobile mechanic, with some experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive, firefighting, and related equipment preferred.
  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials needed for repairs.
  • Must possess a current, valid Michigan Driver's License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns, which includes, but is not limited to, convictions for reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.
  • Some knowledge of the mechanics and operating principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or trade school, with completion of a course of study in automobile maintenance and repair; or any combination of experience and training which will provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.
  • Some knowledge of the standard practices, methods, equipment, and tools of the mechanical trade including the repair and maintenance of firefighting equipment and automotive equipment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION:

  • Possession of a current, valid certification from the State of Michigan as an automotive mechanic.
  • Possession of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Group B with Endorsement N, or temporary Group B with Endorsement N from the State of Michigan at the time of application. Must successfully pass the road test for the Group B, at applicant's own expense, within 60 days after employment with Canton Township.
