Job Description
Nature of Work

Delivers meals to homebound senior citizens on a daily basis, and assists them as possible; observes and reports any changes in the client's condition or behavior, and maintains accurate reports of daily activity.
Work Situation Factors:
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, frequent work at night, beyond normal business hours. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.
Physical Factors:
Moderate physical requirements; frequent lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling fully-loaded meal bags weighing up to 50 pounds.
Environmental Factors:
Work is performed in a commercial kitchen work environment, and outdoors when driving to delivery sites.

This initial posting will be used to fill part-time, contract, on-call positions but may be used to fill multiple vacancies to include positions that are regular, or contract and may be full-time, part-time, or temporary. Hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. but may vary depending on need.
This position is graded BC03.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Program staff in various tasks to assure the program goals are met; assists kitchen/office staff as necessary; may run various errands as needed.
  • Performs daily required pre-run maintenance check on vehicle; maintains assigned delivery mini van in clean and safe condition and reports vehicle maintenance problems immediately to Supervisor; performs temperature test on test meal after last meal is delivered to assure conformance with safe temperature rules.
  • Plans and organizes a delivery route to assure timely delivery; observes and reports any discrepant health condition or behavior of homebound clients to supervisor immediately for follow-up by In-Home Services staff; completes detailed daily, weekly, and monthly reports for billing purposes.
  • Delivers meals to homebound senior clients on a daily basis, adhering to health code and nutrition policy standards; prepares special storage bags and trays for use in packing meals; packs various components of the meals in meal carriers, assuring that specific food temperature requirements are maintained and all condiments are included; transports hot and cold meal carriers from kitchen area and loads into City van; delivers meals according to assigned delivery route, adhering to strict time constraints, but keeping within lawful speed and safety regulations at all times.
  • Delivers donation envelopes weekly and collects any donations received; completes financial reports required and sends locked bag to the Nutrition Office for deposit to be made; washes and cleans bags and other delivery equipment at the completion of the final delivery; assures proper safety and sanitation rules are followed at all times.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to a high school Diploma AND one year of experience in customer service work. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. Some experience working with the elderly is desirable.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATION(S):
Valid driver's license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. Must complete CPR and First Aid training upon employment. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are desirable. Food Handler's permit is desirable.

Knowledge of: City policies and procedures including safety rules and regulations; meal services program collection, processing and distribution procedures; proper driving techniques, rules and applicable laws.

Skills in: Interacting with a diverse group of senior clients in a cooperative, compassionate, and caring manner; safely operating motor vehicle; using courtesy and respect in providing customer service; recordkeeping and records management; exercising independent judgment in resolving basic problems.
