The internship is designed to introduce undergraduate or graduate students to potential careers in local government. We are searching for two students who will work on a special research project with Mayor Elaine M. O’Neal.
Hourly Rate of Pay: Hourly rates are based on the college level
  • 4th year (Senior) or Graduate Student $22.95
  • 1st year (Freshman) $21.00
  • 2nd year (Sophomore) $21.63
  • 3rd year (Junior) $22.28
Work Days/Hours: Hours are flexible, but interns need to be available during business hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Interns will work a maximum of 10 hours per week during the Fall 2023 Semester through December 2023.
Special Research Project
Beginning in September 2022, the Durham City Council began an extensive review of housing issues in Durham, including an analysis of City demographics and the current housing market, including affordability, development processes, infrastructure, and a comprehensive understanding of community needs.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Interns will be responsible for synthesizing information from past presentations and creating a policy document or resource guide to help inform City Council’s decisions related to housing.
  • Work will include conducting literature and other reviews, analyzing data, and performing additional research. Interns may also have the opportunity to explore City operations by attending meetings and events.
  • This project will offer exposure to City departments and organizations representing aspects of the housing market, but the primary assignment will focus on creating a policy document that synthesizes a large quantity of information related to housing.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • Candidate must demonstrate strong written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Candidate must be currently enrolled in a degree program.
  • Must have prior experience leading or collaborating on group projects.
  • Candidate must have experience and/or formal training in a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods (e.g. basic statistics, surveys, focus groups, interviews, and literature reviews).
Additional Preferred Skills
  • Candidates enrolled in a Social Work, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business, Law, or related program
  • Graduate level students
  • Knowledge of the Durham community
