Akkodis is seeking a Material Science Engineer for a six to twelve month contract position with a possibility of permanent conversion with a client located in Grand Rapids, MI. You will be responsible for performing material analysis on Avionic products for both electronic and mechanical components. This includes cross sectioning, Destructive Physical Analysis, fracture and failure analysis, reliability assessment, hazardous material analysis, material composition, part approval / alternate part recommendations, engineering drawing management and drawing creation, and staying apprised of new material technology, process advancements, and Industry Standards. You will engage cross-functionally with design teams, program management, manufacturing engineering, quality, and sourcing teams.
Pay/Salary Range: $50.00 to $60.00 per hour
Material Science Engineer job responsibilities include:
• Perform failure analysis on of circuit card assemblies, printed wiring boards, electrical components, adhesive chemicals and mechanical parts. Create detailed technical reports summarizing test results and/or analysis findings. Analyze test data.
• Support manufacturing with any emergent issues pertaining to materials issues or failure analysis.
• Serve as a technical resource for supply chain in resolving vendor technical questions regarding various drawings and requirements.
• Create and process Engineer Change Requests as needed to update material drawings/specifications. Maintain list of qualified vendors for various materials and electrical components.
• Support new program qualification efforts: either with materials engineering analysis and report, or failure analysis with design recommendations upon testing.
• Conduct tests and/or DOEs to evaluate new or alternate materials and processes.
• Submission of R&D project ideas and business justification for new materials related development work.
• Conduct Destructive Physical Assessments on a variety of electrical components.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor of Science in Materials Science, Chemistry, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
• Minimum five years’ experience working in a highly regulated manufacturing environment. Preferably class 3 electronics manufacturing or assembly. Aerospace, aviation, or automotive preferred.
• Experience using basic material lab equipment (digital/optical microscopes, hardness testers, tensile tester, saws, grinding wheels, cutoff wheels, polishing equipment) and advanced equipment (SEM, FTIR, x-ray).
• Strong understanding of Bill of Materials, parts lists, drawings, and specifications. Comfortable reading and updating a variety of drawing types for different components, parts, assemblies, and materials.
• Basic understanding of formal problem-solving skills (5-whys, fishbone, etc.)
• Strong understanding of material, mechanical, electronic industry standards (ASTM, IPC, MIL, NAS, etc.)
• Project management with demonstrated leadership.
• Basic understanding of electrical component testing and construction.
• Understanding of chemical lab safety. General chemical background including solvents, adhesives, coatings, acids, and sealants
