Job Description
The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff “for fit” makes significant contributions to Howard University’s overall mission.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Process archival records, using standard archival procedures and policies of arranging, describing, and preserving individual and organization records.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Involves no responsibility or authority for the direction of others, except for interns and student employees
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Interacts with patrons of the Research Center, the Howard Community, researchers, students, and faculty.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Coordinates and reviews the work of technical, clerical staff, student workers, and volunteers.
  • Assists in the accessioning of individual and organization archival records, as directed by the Curator for Manuscript Division.
  • Evaluates, sorts, arranges, describes, implements preservation measures, and prepares reference, retrieval, and storage tools relating to the Manuscript Division’s archival records.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assists in the establishment of policies and procedures for the Manuscript Division.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Knowledge of archival theories and practices.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Mature judgement and the ability to prioritize and adapt to numerous duties that must be performed.
  • Ability to recognize, understand and interpret archival concepts, principles, and standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious relationships with faculty, staff, students, donors, researchers, university officials, and the public.
  • Handles, lifts, and moves records, boxed and unboxed, as necessary to support the operation of the position.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate degree in a humanities or social science field or master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution in Library and Information Science. Seven years of related work experience may be substituted in lieu of educational qualifications.
