: Outlaw Partners Managing Editor – Explore Big Sky

Outlaw Partners, LLC; Big Sky, Montana, Full time


Summary

The Managing Editor for Outlaw Partners will oversee day-to-day content and publishing operations for Outlaw Partners’ Explore Big Sky newspaper – Big Sky, Montana’s only local newspaper. This position is a unique combination of a proven and detail-oriented journalist and creative writer who can generate, write and edit compelling stories, while maintaining the practical focus of a leader and news manager.

The Managing Editor will report to the CEO/Publisher, while working closely with editorial and design teams to help guide, formulate and implement content strategy for the Explore Big Skynewspaper (published every 2 weeks) and daily digital news relevant to Big Sky and Southwest Montana. The Managing Editor will manage staff including Staff Writer and Digital Producer, and outside contributors, including sourcing freelance writers to support content needs.


The Managing Editor will have additional input on Outlaw Partners other publications including Mountain Outlaw magazine and VIEWS real estate magazine, and have a general knowledge of distribution routes and reach to ensure Distribution Director is maintaining successful distribution of publications. The Managing Editor will show a keen attention to detail, extreme organization, and be equipped with strong leadership and problem-solving abilities, a passion for storytelling, a willingness to think creatively, and a background in digital media strategy that can be leveraged to facilitate growth in readership and engagement with the respective publications.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Oversee fact-checking and proofreading procedures and write and copy edit when necessary
  • Plan and execute content in print and digital platforms for Explore Big Skynewspaper, daily news
  • Collaborate with Outlaw team to grow audience through digital/social media platforms
  • Identify and apply for editorial awards and contests
  • Manage daily functions to ensure deadlines are met
  • Coordinate native content with sales/marketing teams
  • Manage editorial staff including Staff Writer and Digital Producer
  • Report news and human-interest stories from Big Sky, southwest Montana, and the Greater Yellowstone region
  • Ensure the perspective of all material is in the publications’ style: timely, appropriate, accurate and entertaining, as well as community-, business- and story-driven
  • Coordinate with freelance writers/photographers for all publications; negotiate freelance contracts and trades, manage freelance budget for publications and awards
  • Travel for stories/networking events when possible
  • Lead and implement creative content coverage including videos, shorts, stories or reels to bring news coverage to light creatively
  • Develop and foster relationships with key local leaders, keep updated on local, regional, state and national news (particularly as relates to Montana)
  • Lead daily and weekly editorial meetings, including weekly reporting to Executive Team


REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS:


  • Abilities in planning and coordinating people and operations
  • BSc/BA in journalism or relevant field
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Outstanding communication and people abilities
  • Proven experience as managing editor or relevant role
  • Ability to work traditional and non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends or holidays
  • Attention to detail
  • Exceptional ability in copywriting and editing
  • Reliability and efficiency
  • Working knowledge of online platforms like WordPress and SEO concepts
  • Proficiency in English
