Job Description

Job Title: Maintenance Shop Supervisor, Energy Operations


Job Purpose: The Maintenance Shop (MS) Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Maintenance shop, within Energy Operations (EO), ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the team. The shop comprises eleven bargaining unit employees: 2 Maintenance Electricians, 4 IC&E Technicians, and 5 Maintenance Mechanics including 1 Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice, who maintain the Stanford Central Energy Facility, the Stanford Process Steam Plant, the Redwood City Central Energy Hub, and the Low Temperature Hot Water, Chilled Water, Low-Pressure Steam distribution systems and metering, and Campus Street Lights. The MS supervisor shall participate in department strategic management. The MS supervisor reports to the EO Associate Director, Thermal Systems Maintenance.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 20% Of Time

Safety and Environment: Assure compliance with all safety rules and regulations is maintained, and that safety is the number one priority for plant employees and contractors. Ensures the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP) is implemented, and administers all Safe Work Permits and LOTO activities for their team in coordination with the Operations team and Safety Manager. Maintains a culture of safety by creating an environment where employees exhibit safe work behaviors. Assures their team activities are in full compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations.


  • 45% Of Time

Team Management: Manages their team’s work schedules in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner. Ensures that the MS staff functions in a manner consistent with Energy Operations and Stanford University goals and policies. Develops and implements maintenance procedures and controls to ensure O&M goals are achieved. Directly Supervises daily operation and management of assigned facilities and programs, including scheduling and assigning work to staff and coordinating with staff, subcontractors, and/or vendors. Utilizes CMMS to assign, track, plan, schedule, and report on work. Keeps the EO organization informed and ensures good communications, along with cooperation with both external agencies and Stanford organizations, ensuring the highest level of customer service is maintained. Participates in root cause analysis, forced event reporting and accident investigation.


  • 15% Of Time

Training and Development: Assures employee training, qualification and apprenticeship programs are implemented for safety, environmental, and personnel development to produce a workforce that is motivated, flexible, technically astute, and consistent with company culture and values. Assures the development and effective utilization of employees through job assignments, training programs, and personal development plans. Administer an effective job performance review program consistent with company guidelines. Interviews, hires, and trains plant employees. Plans, assigns, and directs work. Appraises employee performance, rewards and disciplines employees. Addresses concerns and solves problems.


  • 10% Of Time

Reporting: Works with EO Administration, Electrical Systems, Operations and Engineering teams to ensure highest levels of system performance. Evaluates system maintenance to identify and implement opportunities for safety, reliability, and efficiency improvements.


4. 10% Of Time

Budget: Assists in department budget development of the MS, Street Lights, Chilled Water and LTHW System budgets. Works with EO leadership to develop a maintenance budget plan.


The expected pay range for this position is $109,000.00 to $149,000.00 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.


REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate technical area, or combination of technical education, training, and experience. Must have at least five (5) years’ experience with the maintenance of utility or industrial mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrates good judgment when making decisions and recommendations. Ability and willingness to work overtime to support energy system needs which are vital to 24/7 system operations. Occasional off-hours support is to be expected.
  • Approaches and plans work in an organized manner to meet project commitments.
  • Able to apply basic engineering principles and theory.
  • Prioritizes, plans, and recommends solutions for routine work.
  • Effectively communicates both written and orally.

DESIRED:

  • Superior CMMS, Work Process, and Procedural knowledge.
  • 5 years supervisory experience
  • Experience with writing operations procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 11-20 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  • Frequently sitting, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.

  • May be exposed to noise > 80dB TWA.
  • May work at heights 4 - 90 ft.
  • Will sometime require entry into confined spaces, steam vaults and tunnels that may be below grade and have surfaces >110*F
