Job Description

Linux System Admin


Robert Half is looking for a strong Linux Admin who is passionate about innovation in the education industry. This position will play a key role in helping the company in automating the deployment of Linux (RHEL and Ubuntu) and maintain the computers with the use of Saltstack. Assisting in maintaining the existing infrastructure and helping the completion of outstanding projects related to Linux services to deploy to our users, as well as, support end users focusing on Linux, but also assisting with macOS and Windows needs.


This job requires advanced knowledge and skill in the installation and maintenance of information technology hardware and software at all layers; a full understanding of industry practices, solving, decision making, customer service, system documentation and communications; familiarity with enterprise systems, networking, security and overall IT architecture including systems management research workload along with NIST 800-171 I DFARS 7012 compliance issues.


Responsibilities:

  • Advanced system administration of systems for multiple research groups, including monitoring and ensuring performance and reliability objectives.
  • Responsible for the data management and security operation for multiple research groups. Formulate and implement recovery plans including backup; communicates security and data management practices
  • Develop complex scripts or programs to automate monitoring and deployment activities; review source code when appropriate.
  • Responsible for the operational support of a large and diverse set of set of cyber-infrastructure resources (including desktops, workstations, data acquisition systems, and other computational and data resources.
  • Recommend hardware and software procurements; manage assets for a large number of research groups.
  • Perform updates to server and desktop software/applications; recommend and implement replacement, consolidation and/or upgrade of computational and data resources.
  • Develop and recommend standard operating procedures.
  • Design, develop, test, implement and evaluate functional and technical IT system requirements and specifications; provide expert technical advice to research groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Consult with academic and research faculty and administrative leadership; analyze complex needs and requirements for large research groups or instructional labs.


Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work individually and in groups.
  • 4 years of Linux/UNIX maintenance and support experience with at least two of those years in large environments (100+ servers/workstations environments) as well as windows
  • Familiarity with Windows and MacOS desktop management technologies such as SCCM, JAMF Pro or similar tools is a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge in the installation, configuration and maintenance of Linux servers and workstations (RHEL and Ubuntu), and services provided on those, such as, but not infrastructure, etc.
  • Ability to work outside of typical business hours as needed, potentially including but not limited to evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred Certifications: Red Hat certifications or equivalent related to management of Linux systems are a plus.
  • Experience with the integration and management of Linux machines in Active Directory environments.
  • Experience using automated provisioning and configuration management tools to manage large server environments such as Saltstack, Cfengine, Puppet, Chef, ansible, or equivalent.
