Job Description
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician provides nursing care in accordance with the legal scope of practice and within established standards of care, policies and procedures. Demonstrates performance consistent with the Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan of the organization. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice and treats coworkers, patients, families and all members of the health care team with dignity and respect.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs patient care functions, within the scope of competency, considering age related needs of the patient as prescribed by physician/health care professional's) following established protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies & Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities & applicable state, federal & local laws.
  • Prepare specimens & specimens for lab analysis.
  • Arrange for equipment repair & maintenance.
  • Perform surgical preps.
  • Administer patient first aid.
  • Instruct patients on general health & basic self care procedures.
  • Prepare & position patients for procedures.

  • Administer enemas.
  • Provide therapeutic care as ordered by physician.
  • Assess & monitor patients' condition & notify physician/health care professional for disposition.
  • Sterilize instruments & equipment.
  • Maintain clean work area.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
  • Rinse & clean instruments & equipment.
  • Respond to Code Blues.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Apply & remove dressings.
  • Follow standard infection control procedures.
  • Monitor supply of oxygen & gas tanks.
  • Patient/Care Procedures: Explain purpose & process of examinations, tests & medical procedures to patients, following established guidelines.
  • Take & record patient vital signs, height, weight, etc.
  • Assist medical personnel with special procedures, minor surgical procedures and/or diagnostic exams.
  • Answer member inquires.
  • Identify & arrange for equipment needing repair.
  • Apply basic orthopedic devices, as ordered by physician.
  • Sterilize instruments & equipment.
  • Complete laboratory, radiology requisitions & specialized test forms.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of abnormal lab test results.
  • Provide medical information & education to patients, following established protocols & guidelines.
  • Apply principles of aseptic technique & infection control as directed by the Infection Control Manual.
  • Remove sutures following established protocols.
  • Prepare & administer medications as directed by physician order following established protocols.
  • Observe machine monitors.
  • Prepare patients for physical examinations.
  • Initiate emergency procedures (including basic CPR) & provide emergency patient treatments.
  • Administer inhalation therapy.
  • Maintain equipment & supplies.
  • Instruct patient in use of home equipment.
  • Monitor patient flow & assign/direct other ancillary personnel as needed.
  • Lift patients.
  • Participate in development of nursing care plans.
  • Arrange for equipment repair & maintenance.
  • Observe patient condition for reactions during & after procedures.
  • Document pertinent patient information, assessment & nursing procedures following established protocols.
  • Review, explain & clarify physician orders with patient.
  • Obtain specimens from patients (urine, stool, etc.).
  • Monitor patient vital signs.
  • Execute treatments such as urinary catheterization, bladder irrigations, suction procedures & throat irrigations.
  • Monitor patients for bleeding.
  • Perform venipuncture & finger sticks to obtain blood samples.

Experience
  • Zero (0) to one (1) year LVN experience.
Education
  • N/A.
Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
  • Current California Licensed Vocational Nurse.
  • Current Basic Life Support card.

Notes:

  • This is an on-call position, days and hours may vary.
  • Will involve every other weekend or rotating weekends.
  • LVN performs various eye tests, conducts ancillary clinics, and does pre-appt workups.
