Job Description
Definition

The City of Newport Beach is seeking a highly motivated and detail orientated individual to join the team as a Library Assistant in the Library Services Department. Currently, there is one part-time vacancy in the Central Library Branch.

SELECTION COMPONENTS:
  • Virtual Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of July 10, 2023. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur in the Central Library, Balboa, Corona del Mar and Mariners branches.
  • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of June 29, 2023.
  • Online Exam: The most qualified applicants will be invited to take an online exam. This is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 3, 2023.

Career Path:
This is the entry-to-journey level class in the para-professional library series. The series includes part-time Library Assistant and part-time Librarian I.

Schedule:

This position works a flexible schedule of up to 19 hours per week and will include days, nights and weekends based on the needs of the Library.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: No experience is required. Library experience preferred.

Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Newport Beach Employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.


This position is Part-time/Seasonal and is provided the following minimum benefits:

Part-time employees are enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) beginning on their first day of employment. The total defined contribution to the plan is 7.5% of your compensation of which the City pays 3.75%. The City does not participate in the federal Social Security program. Your benefits may be reduced if you work for an employer who does not withhold Social Security taxes from your salary.

Medicare: Federal mandate requires all employees hired or rehired by any government agency on or after April 1, 1986 to participate in Medicare. The City matches the employee's Medicare contribution, which is 1.45% of salary. Enrollment and deduction amounts are subject to change based on negotiated terms and additional laws.
