Job Description
Job Title: Library Assistant


Department: Library


Reports To: Library Director


Job Type: This is a full time, non exempt position.


General Description


Operates the library circulation desk; participates in the inventory of the library’s collections; assists in the supervision of library work-study student assistants.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


Ø Operates circulation desk: charges and discharges library materials, collects fines, reserves equipment, registers on-site borrowers, etc.


Ø Participates in inventory of library’s collections; reconciles barcodes with library materials; identifies missing material


Ø Assists in the setup and use of equipment in the Library Auditorium


Ø Assists with maintaining library equipment available for loan, such as computer laptops, iPads, projectors, cameras, etc.


Ø Assists with analyzing shelving space needs and collection shifts


Ø Answers basic procedural and directional questions


Ø Provides basic computer/printer support for Library student lab computers


Ø Sorts library mail


Ø Performs other duties that are essential to the achievement of efficient library operations


Ø Cooperates with others in the timely and effective completion of assigned responsibilities.


Position Requirements


Ø High School diploma required; bachelor degree preferred


Ø One year office experience, preferably in an academic library


Typical Physical Demands


Ø Ability to assign tasks to and check the work of work study students


Ø Ability to express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications


Ø Ability to operate or learn to operate a microcomputer


Ø Ability to work well with people of varying educational and cultural backgrounds and experience levels


Ø Ability to work cooperatively with other library and university employees


Ø Ability to prioritize tasks effectively, solve problems creatively and constructively, cope with a changing environment, and be self-motivated


Ø Ability to lift, move, and carry a minimum of twenty pounds up and down stairs


Ø Ability to conduct business over the telephone


Work Schedule


This is a non-exempt, 12 month, 40 hour/week position. Mon-Fri 8:00-4:30, possibility of occasional night or weekend shift.
