Job Duties

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Margaret R. and Robert M. Freeman Library has an exciting opportunity for an hourly wage Cataloging Assistant. The Library provides access to an impressive wealth of rare and unique primary source materials for scholars, researchers, and the public. The Margaret R. and Robert M. Freeman Library includes over 4,500 volumes in the rare book collection including monographs, exhibition catalogs, portfolios and rare journals. The Archives collection consists of over 2,000 linear feet and covers the museum’s history from the 1930s to today.
The qualified individual should have recent practical cataloging experience, possess decision making skills as well as the abilities to work independently with limited oversight, and accomplish their work as assigned while following local and national cataloging policies and standards.
Duties include:
Performs enhanced copy and original monograph cataloging using current national and local standards.
Classifies works using Library of Congress Classification and local classification.
Assigns appropriate subject and name authority headings using Library of Congress Subject and Name Authority headings.
Provides updates and maintenance of local authority records.
Assigns and updates item, and holdings records in the cataloging system.
Participates in local catalog quality control, database cleanup, physical processing, inventory, and correction procedures.
Assists in maintaining documentation of local cataloging and physical processing policies.
Physically process library material: creating and affixing spine labels, barcodes, RFID tags, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Recent experience applying AACR2/RDA and MARC 21 cataloging standards, Library of Congress Classification (LCCN), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Name Authorities (LCNA), OCLC Connexion, Integrated Library Systems/Library Management Systems, and LC Subject and Name Authority records.
Ability to interpret and apply local cataloging policy standards.
Ability to use library management system (LMS) functions used in carrying out job duties and understanding of how other library systems and modules relate and interact with the LMS.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret cataloging records and policy and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information, respond to questions, and provide staff with requests.
Ability to apply active listening skills.
General Knowledge of PC software and hardware required including e-mail, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
Ability to operate in a network environment and use internet and electronic resources.
Ability to work while sitting at a computer for long periods and physically handle materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and 2+ years of cataloging experience.
Experience with original and enhanced copy cataloging primary source materials.
Experience working with Alma Primo VE library management system.
