This is a teaching-focused position for a candidate interested in leading and contributing to courses associated with SENR’s Environmental Science and Forestry majors and our graduate degrees. The appointee will teach the equivalent of three courses during the academic year and will contribute to the development of a summer-session field course. Key courses which the lecturer will lead could include: i) leading a section of The Dynamics of Ecosystem Restoration (ENR 5560); ii) contributing to a team-taught introductory restoration course (ENR 3800); iii) leading an introductory course in data analysis (ENR 2000); and iv) contributing to advanced instruction in the use of R for statistics (ENR 8600).

Position opportunities: SENR’s two Forestry specializations (Forest Ecosystem Science and Management and Forestry and Wildlife) are accredited by the Society of American Foresters while our Ecosystem Restoration specialization was only the second in the United States to achieve formal alignment with the Society of Ecosystem Restoration’s professional certification program. The candidate will be mentored to develop their teaching profile and will have access to training and course development support through the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning. They will engage in scholarship of teaching and have the opportunity to participate in research on student outcomes and experiences. Teaching activities may make use of SENR’s and CFAES’s extensive research and natural areas including Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens, Pomerene Forest Laboratory, Waterman Farm, Olentangy Wetland Research Park, and the Gwynne Conservation Area.

Required and Desired Qualifications

Degree requirements

• A PhD in ecosystem/community ecology, rangeland ecology or forest science.

Experience required

• Preparation and development of teaching materials
• Ability to lead field-based instruction in ecology and environmental science
• Instruction of graduate and undergraduate students in applied ecology and biostatistics
• Experience teaching across a variety of course formats including large and small classrooms, lab and field settings, and on-line
• Use of online learning support systems (e.g. Carmen Canvas)
• Delivering instructions in the use of R for statistical analysis
• Proven ability to set and reach goals, work independently without close supervision, and give acute attention to detail and deadlines.
• A record of outstanding teaching performance
• Strong quantitative skills and familiarity with statistical techniques for applied ecology

Desirable experience

• Expertise in areas of anticipated program growth, including natural history and plant species identification, vegetation monitoring and assessment, data measurements and analysis.
• Experience in field-based teaching
• Mentoring of undergraduate researchers
