Safe Schools Program for LGBTQ Students
Full-Time

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated specialized knowledge of intersecting oppressions of race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability.
  • Experience facilitating training and professional development sessions for educators, trainers, families, school administrators, students, and/or organizations.
  • Experience working with students in K-12 schools or community-based settings.
  • Experience creating training assessments and evaluations.

Work and lived experience are highly considered.

  • Coordinate and conduct training; provide technical assistance to schools and education-based organizations.
  • Revise training curriculum to better emphasize intersectionality, racial equity, and accessibility. Create a content assessment plan to evaluate curriculum updates.
  • Provide input into program improvement and strategic planning. Attend weekly staff meetings and regular retreats.
  • Develop and facilitate an annual orientation for all training consultants.
  • As part of the Safe Schools Program for LGBTQ Students leadership team, the Training and Technical Assistance Coordinator manages the training program (coordination, strategic planning, evaluation, and professional development for training consultants). This position reports to the Safe Schools Program Manager.
  • Respond to technical assistance phone calls and emails appropriately, according to Safe Schools Program protocols and practices.
  • Track and respond to all requests received for Safe Schools Program services in partnership with the Administrative Assistant, and work with Safe Schools Program Manager in assigning appropriate training consultants to requesting schools.
  • Design and implement a train-the-trainer program for youth and family speakers.
  • Co-write an annual report highlighting training and technical assistance programming.

Our staff is still working remotely. However, travel is expected to facilitate trainings across Massachusetts at schools and organizations. Access to a car is necessary for this role. This role will have flexible hours (agreed upon with the Safe Schools Program Manager and Executive Director).

Under the supervision of the Commission Executive Director, this individual will devote their full time, skill, labor and attention to the performance of their responsibilities.

The Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth is an independent state agency established under M.G.L. Chapter 3 Section 67 that advises others in state government on effective policies, programs, and resources for LGBTQ youth. Our 50-member Commission and its staff issue annual recommendations, work in partnership with 18 state entities, and hold community events and listening sessions. The Commission also produces the Safe Schools Program with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education provides training and technical assistance to schools across the state, organizes the statewide network of Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs), and works to make schools safer for all students.

What You Have:
  • Demonstrated experience working with LGBTQ issues and populations, especially with LGBTQ youth of color; demonstrated proficiency with the concepts and terminology of social justice frameworks, including anti-racist, feminist, queer, and anti-ableist discourses; experience working with K-12 schools and school districts is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment; self-motivated and proactive; ability to assess and determine how to handle specific tasks; knows when to ask for guidance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive, online data collection systems (like Google Forms), meeting software, data management, and website interfaces (for updating information); ability to quickly learn and use new digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with solving problems or issues that require some investigation, analysis and/or interpretation to determine the course of action; ability to engage in research and investigation independently.
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team; strong collaboration skills; ability to establish effective working relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to anticipate and meet needs to ensure efficient and smooth operations.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills; detail oriented and organized; strong time management skills; ability to multitask and prioritize work effectively; ability to manage a project from inception to completion.
  • Schedule flexibility and availability for evening and weekend meetings and events.
  • Attends to details of professional presentation of documents, correspondence, etc.
  • Excellent, advanced written and verbal communication skills; editing and proofreading skills; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to effectively and diplomatically relate to a wide variety of people.
