This position reports to the Manager of Laboratory Operations. Responsible for the review of daily workload, staff training and competency and compliance with applicable standards of the AABB, CLIA and NYSDOH. This position requires advanced technical knowledge of immunohematology techniques and knowledge of proper handling of biological materials and hazardous chemicals.


  • Perform and supervise performance of Proficiency Testing Surveys. Prepare Proficiency Testing Survey reports and maintain Proficiency Testing Survey records.
  • Review, interpret and report results prepared by staff. Perform immunohematological test procedures on patients and donors to resolve complex serologic problems. Write patient consultation reports including transfusion recommendations/suggestions sent to hospital blood bank supervisors and Medical Director and coordinate with blood bank supervisors, Medical Director and private physicians to provide the safest blood products for patients with red cell / antibody problems. Assist the Operations Manager to maintain adequate inventories of rare and routine reagent antisera, reagent red blood cells, chemicals, equipment/instruments and laboratory supplies.
  • Keep up-to-date on current blood banking procedures and research and assistant/participate in educational programs such as lectures, seminars, workshops, etc.
  • Orient /train new employees. Supervise competency testing for new and current employees.
  • Comply with AABB Standards as an Immunohematology Reference Laboratory. Write and/or revise Laboratory procedures/policies in accordance with RIBC policies and regulatory requirements. Work with Operations Manager to develop and implement new procedures and policies. Perform data collection and update Laboratory Quality Assurance Program as necessary.
  • Manage rare and unusual donors/blood through coding/classification to maximize the effective use of rate and unusual blood types. Represent RIBC in American Rare Donor Program (ARDP) activities.
  • Participate in rotating on-call (weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights) for consultation, patient work-ups, antigen negative unit selection or screening for transfusion problems.


BS in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.


At least 6 years of blood banking experience at the bench level.


Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Products such as Word, Excel and Outlook.


RIBC National Clinical Laboratory Certification (ASCP or equivalent)


The hiring range for the Lead Laboratory Technologist -IRL is $38.00-$40.00 per hour.

This position reports to the Laboratory Services Manager and Director of Laboratory Services. This position also works closely with the New York Blood Center Enterprise IRL laboratories. Responsible for the supervision of Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) staff, daily workload and compliance with applicable standards of the AABB, RI State, NY State and CLIA regulations. This position requires advanced technical knowledge of immunohematology techniques and knowledge of proper handling of biological materials and hazardous chemicals.


  • Assign and supervise daily workload and activities of IRL staff.
  • Maintain rare donor inventories. Initiate notification of problem donors (ABO Subgroups, positive DATs, rare donors, etc.). Manage rare and unusual donors/blood through coding/classification to maximize the effective use of rate and unusual blood types.
  • Maintain all files, records and forms pertaining to patient and donor testing in accordance with RIBC policies and appropriate regulatory requirements.
  • Write and/or revise IRL procedures/policies in accordance with RIBC policies and regulatory requirements. Develop and implement new procedures and policies. Assist in developing and maintaining computer programs for department. Perform data collection.
  • Maintain adequate inventories of reagent antisera, reagent red blood cells, chemicals, equipment/instruments and laboratory supplies. Procure and maintain rare red blood cells and rare antisera inventories. Represent RIBC in American Rare Donor Program (ARDP) activities.
  • Review, interpret and report results prepared by staff.
  • Write patient consultation reports including transfusion recommendations/suggestions sent to hospital blood bank supervisors and Medical Director and coordinate with blood bank supervisors to provide the safest blood products for patients with red cell / antibody problems.

  • Orient /train new employees. Supervise competency testing for new and current employees. Evaluate staff through annual performance appraisal and counsel when necessary. Assist Manager/Directory in hiring staff.
  • Keep up-to-date on current blood banking procedures and research and assistant/participate in educational programs such as lectures, seminars, workshops, etc. Participate in research and development as warranted. Introduction/instruction of rotating technologists, pathology residents and hematology-oncology fellows.
  • Schedule staff to ensure adequate coverage of the laboratory.
  • Perform immunohematological test procedures on patients and donors to resolve complex serologic problems.
  • Assist Director and Manager in budget planning and long-term Capital equipment needs(s).
  • Provide back up on call coverage, when necessary.
  • Assure compliance with AABB Standards as an Immunohematology Reference Laboratory.


BS in Medical Technology or related field. Certified Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB).


At least 6 years of blood banking experience at the bench level or higher post baccalaureate degree and national certification.


Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Products such as Word, Excel and Outlook. Supervise IRL Staff and others as assigned.


The hiring range for the Supervisor, Immunohematology Reference Lab is $87,000 to $91,920 per year.
