Description
SUMMARY
The role of Security Shift Lead is to ensure appropriate Security coverage to maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees and providers. The Shift Lead ensures the provision a security services throughout the facility and on campus grounds to maintain order, monitor activity to identify and report potential risks or threats, prevent accidents and/or injuries and to deter harmful activity such as theft, vandalism and violence. Shift Leads are responsible for appropriate resource allocation understanding that priorities can shift at a moment’s notice. Security Shift Leads contribute to maintaining a positive environment through consistent constructive interactions with all team members.
Entry Requirements
  • Must demonstrate competent leadership skill
  • High level job performance, support employee/team engagement, and maintain positive working relationships and rapport with other security staff.
  • Proficient in knowledge of hospital policies and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively in a courteous and respectful manner consistent with organizational values.

  • Possesses a valid driver’s license.
  • Fulfills all entry requirements and assigned duties under the position description of Security Officer.
  • Two years demonstrated exemplary performance as a healthcare security officer or other Munson Medical Center position.
  • Possess team skills consistent with organization’s core values.
  • Possesses an associate’s degree or cumulative experience in Security related field which may include; criminal justice experience, Munson Medical Center Lead Position experience or other related field.
  • Continues to report to Manager of Security.
  • Computer skills required including Microsoft Office, data base utilization, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrates above average communication, education and presentation skills: written and oral.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Promotes personal and patient safety.

Shift Lead Officer Duties
  • Ensures appropriate lunch and break times for each Security Officer.
  • The lead officer is responsible a for assuring that all officers have had the appropriate training and an clear understanding of the responsibilities that the job entails.
  • Provide direction and role assignments to security officers during an assigned shifts, assign and review work.
  • The Shift Lead ensures ongoing communication with key departments such as to Nursing Supervisor, ED leadership, D6, etc., and law enforcement as needed.
  • Interfaces with the Nursing Supervisor, ED
  • Ensures Munson Medical Center’s policies, procedures and values are followed by all Security Officers
  • Ensures thoroughly and timely completion of all required documentation for all Security Officers each shift.
  • Duties will also include rotation among security patrols.
  • Provides leadership and direction consistent with Security manager and System Director of Safety and Security.
Security Officer Expectations
  • Demonstrates knowledge in areas concerning the safety of employees, patients and visitors in accordance with Joint Commission standards and MIOSHA regulations.
  • Embraces True North concepts and guiding principles including patients as our top priority.
  • Supports Munson Medical Center’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Supports Munson Medical Center’s Safety and Security plans.
  • Ensures Security vehicle maintenance and upkeep.
  • Knows the physical requirements of the job and works within those guidelines. Performs job duties safely at all times, utilizing proper body mechanics and transferring / lifting techniques.
  • Makes safe work practices a priority every day and recognizes safety is a self-responsibility.
  • Recognizes the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) and uses when necessary.
  • Embraces and supports the Continuous Quality Improvement philosophy of Plan, Do, Check, and Act (PDCA) at Munson Medical Center.
Security Officer Duties
Officer duties including Shift Leads are rotated every two hours. Posts include: Dispatch, inside patrol, outside patrol, Main Lobby, ED Checkpoint, MPB and Family Practice (except weekends). Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Investigates and prepares clear, concise and thorough incident reports.
  • Patrols designated areas in and around the Munson Medical Center campus, including visual and physical checks of buildings located on the premises.
  • Reports any unsafe situation or equipment according to hospital procedure.
  • Demonstrates competency in monitoring of security systems, including: access control, security cameras and fire alarm systems.
  • Performs escorts for employees and visitors.
  • Performs scheduled locks / unlocks of areas within the hospital.
  • Oversees patient observations in ED, when the patient is on “Hold”, the possibility of physically acting out exists, danger to self or others, or presents an elopement risk.
  • Inspects fire extinguishers.
  • Responds to emergency pages.
  • Assists with vehicle jump-starts.
  • Patrols all Munson parking lots and enforces parking regulations outlined in the parking policy.
  • Applies four-point restraints with qualified staff to control combative patients.
  • Performs monthly checks of all emergency call boxes, safety phones, infant abduction security system (HUGS), and panic alarms.
  • Responds to all emergency codes.
  • Picks up patient belongings and lost items from specific units.
  • Responds to facility security issues and works to mitigate associated risks.
Demonstrates Competency In The Following Counter-terrorism Strategies
  • Assists with mass casualty influx resulting from a biological, radiological or chemical incident.
  • Controls traffic and crowds for mass causality influx.
  • Ability to lock down the building and know the operation of the automated locking system.
  • Understands both internal and external reporting responsibilities.
  • Participates in decontamination procedures, including set up of decontamination zones.
  • High level of awareness of the potential for terrorist activities.
  • Control of hospital access after hours
Emergency Department Security Responsibilities
  • Identify opportunities to de-escalate and promote positive outcomes.
  • Identify potentially violent individuals (patients, visitors, etc.), and assist with diverting negative behaviors.
  • Monitor visitor traffic into the ED through rounding and intercom system.
  • Search/wand for weapons in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Obtain briefing from Dispatch Officer in Security Command Center.
  • Meet, greet, and assist patients and their families as needed.
  • Establish positive rapport with all ED staff to promote team environment.
  • Check in with ED Charge Nurse and attend evening “Huddle” with ED staff.
  • Provide security presence throughout the ED, with focus on the South Wing.
  • Monitor visitor entrance, waiting area, main entrance, and ambulance entrance through continuous rounding.
When Physical Intervention Is Required
  • Call for assistance, use radio
  • Instruct Dispatch or ED staff to call Switchboard to overhead page Code Gray
  • Facilitate debriefs with staff
  • Utilizes strategies to prevent or respond to workplace violence situations.
  • Take the lead to promote safety among staff
  • Insure CPI protocol is used to restrain the patient
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Understands and demonstrate key strategies for effective customer service.
  • Contain the situation
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of roles and responses for each internal and external code or emergency such as fire, infant abduction, or mass casualty influx.
  • Intervene early
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the organization’s policy for restraining and applying restraints.

Training Requirements
  • Completes North Flight Safety training within 6 months of start date.
  • Completes Munson Medical Center Human Resource Department Safety Training prior to start date.
  • Security staff has the opportunity to become IAHSS certified.
  • Completes comprehensive Security orientation process within 2 weeks of start date.
  • Completes CPI Basic and APS courses within the first 4 months of hire.
  • Completes hospital orientation within 30 days of start date.
