What are Trust Fund Positions?
Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. OVERVIEW

This position is located at NZCBI Headquarters 3001 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington DC 2008. It is accessible via mass transit, and onsite employee parking is currently available at no cost. Hybrid Telework Schedule Eligible, however, a minimum of 3-days onsite per week is required due to the nature of the position. Additionally, there is a requirement for this position to regularly visit NZCBI’s Conservation Biology Institute campus located in Front Royal, VA.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops strategies to increase revenue opportunities at NZCBI to include both short- and long-range planning. Develops and implements marketing strategies that draw increased visitorship and encourage visitor participation in the full range of experiences, opportunities, and amenities with an eye towards increasing overall revenue.
  • Provides administrative and program management work involving oversight of programs to integrate new revenue opportunities, functions, processes, and operations into NZCBI. Develops detailed plans, tasks, milestone dates and schedules to ensure proper sequencing of events and tracking of progress and costs throughout the life cycle of the program. Reviews programs to determine how they can be accomplished with the least disruption to workers and mission operations. Manages short- and long-range planning activities that include multi-year work plans that are the products of subordinate organizational projects/programs.
  • Provides direct oversight and management of the revenue processes at NZCBI, ensuring tight fiscal controls are in place. Provides financial projections for all revenue activities, strategically tracks incoming funds, and manages long term financial planning for revenue and marketing activities. Develops internal guidance for revenue partnerships and for developing and vetting concepts. Drafts guidance and direction regarding program management and reporting. Plans and initiates a comprehensive evaluation system for the review and analysis of proposed costs, program development and performance.
  • The Lead, Revenue Generation and Marketing serves as a senior advisor to the Associate Director of Business, Innovation, and Technology, other Associate Directors, the Deputy Director, and the Director of NZCBI on issues surrounding managed programs and interactions with outside agencies, such as Smithsonian Enterprises. Develops market projections and business case analyses with an eye towards providing decision quality information to leaders to make the best business decisions. Provides regular financial reporting and revenue projections to the Director, Deputy Director, and members of the Senior Team.
  • Works with Smithsonian Enterprises on activities of mutual interest, assessing the long-term fiscal viability of activities and working to improve the financial standing of NZCBI. Acts as the primary liaison with Smithsonian Enterprises on developing and implementing activities and provides recommendations on possible new sources of revenue.
  • Establishes program objectives and units of measure for determining when objectives have been met. Makes recommendations for actions when adjustments or a different course of action is necessary. Takes actions necessary to correct any identified problems.
  • Develops administrative documentation in support of contracting, procurement activities, financial tracking and management, budgeting, business case analyses, revenue projections, and project management. Conducts market studies to assess the performance of current activities against the larger market and makes recommendations for adjustments.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Expert skill in program management work involving oversight of programs to integrate new revenue opportunities, functions, processes, and operations.
  • Expert ability in providing financial projections, strategically tracking funds, and managing long term financial planning for revenue and marketing activities.
  • Demonstrated skills in establishing program objectives and units of measure for determining when objectives have been met. Ability to make recommendations for actions when adjustments or a different course of action is necessary and take actions necessary to correct any identified problems.
  • Expert ability to develop market projections and business case analyses to allow executive leadership to make informed decisions.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of internal and external organizations, developing approaches to address significant areas of disagreement and negotiating to enact approaches of mutual benefit.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide advice, council, and recommendations to executive leadership with the goal of gaining approval for new and unique approaches to problems and issues.
  • Extensive skill in exercising delegated authority to carry out programs supporting the integration of new revenue opportunities, functions, processes, and operations.
  • Expert knowledge in the development of strategies to increase revenue opportunities to include both short- and long-range planning.
  • Demonstrated skills in drafting internal policies for unit-wide implementation.
