Job Description

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Applies knowledge of policies, guidelines, standards, and requirements related hospital housekeeping programs
  • Understands the various cleaning agents used by Environmental Management Service to ensure they are properly used to prevent damage to floors, furniture, walls etc.
  • Receives clean linen from the VISN Textile Care Facility and assists with the loading and off-loading of clean and soiled linens to and from the linen delivery trailer
  • Ensures supplies, chemicals, and equipment are appropriately safeguarded to prevent unauthorized access, inappropriate usage, waste, or theft
  • Assist with the collection of soiled linen as well as the delivery of clean linen throughout the medical facility using a drivable and or handheld electric cart
  • Maintains and cleans of his/her work area to include daily cleaning of the break room, dust mopping and wet mopping of the main linen room floor, quarterly stripping and waxing of the main linen floor and the emptying of the trash daily
  • Sorts linen by type and size and determines appropriate linen quantities for delivery to each utilizing unit
  • Conducts a semiannual linen inventory and provides the information to the Textile Care Supervisor for further review and analysis
  • Arranges pallets based on height, weight, and special handling requirements as well as identifying damage to stock through visual Inspection and physical inspections
  • Processes linen requests based on daily linen quotas and PAR levels
  • Issues uniforms and runs the dryer and washer machines if assigned
  • Assure safety compliance is met, machinery and equipment are to be cleaned, maintained, and kept in excellent working order
  • Delivers carts containing clean linen to various wards and clinics then returns the previous day's linen carts to the Central Linen Room for loading
  • Prepares inventory reports, oversees the receiving and logging of all incoming linen items, unloads and stacks incoming stock, arranges pallets based on height and weight and checks shipping documents to verify and ensure incoming and outgoing shipments are in proper order
Work Schedule: 5 days a week; Tour of Duties varies and will be discussed during the interview process

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The workers must be able to stand or walk continuously on concrete floors and will need a certain amount of quickness in hand and arm movements to keep up with the established production standards. Laundries can be extremely noisy and usually hot and humid, and workers are exposed to the possibility of bruises from carts or machinery. If required to sort laundry, workers wear protective masks, gloves and gowns. Work requires considerable lifting, carrying, and relocating of linens weighing as much as 20-70 lbs. Items such as chairs, desks, file cabinets, boxes and some laundry detergents may require dollies to move. Items heavier than 8 kilograms (40 pounds) are moved with appropriate weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Assistance with moving heavy equipment and linen throughout the Medical Center will require assistance in movement of such linen and equipment due to weight, size, and other conditions as required by the assignment.
WORK CONDITIONS: Assignments may be performed under all weather conditions. The incumbent will be required to drive a motor vehicle and will be regularly exposed to dust, exhaust fumes, smog, and traffic noise. In addition, the incumbent is frequently exposed to congested and slow-moving traffic conditions. An incumbent is continually on the alert to avoid injuries from hand or powered tools. Incumbent may be exposed to eye and skin injury from flying debris and will be required to wear protective gear to reduce the risk of injury. In addition, the incumbent will be required to wear ear plugs, safety glasses, protective gloves, masks, and back braces when needed. Assignments may require work being completed in high noise levels and can involve some contact with adhesives that may be related to moves. Work may require wearing protective clothing such as hardhats, steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, masks, and rubber aprons.

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.
