Job Summary:

Chloeta is looking for a Landscaping Architect to join our team and oversee the planning and development of external spaces.

This position will assist with Historic Preservation/Cultural Resources services for the US Forest Service Region 9. All History, Archaeology, and Architectural History personnel shall meet the professional qualifications standards found in the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation per FSM 2360.92.2360.92.


Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may serve as a coach and mentor for other instructors.

Job Classification: Full-time


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of Collections for Curation under Federal Standards.
  • Ability to identify and describe various landscape characteristics and the major processes, uses, and physical components visible in the landscape and how they relate to one or more historic context over time.
  • Research and development of historic contexts for a variety of cultural resources topics. Researching and analyzing cultural resources, archival materials, and data to develop a historic context to improve how the agency manages a type or types of historic properties and to assist with evaluating the property type. Historic contexts will include: statement of context, background history, definition of context (establish the thematic, temporal, and geographic parameters of the theme or area of significance), development of theme/s, relationship to state and national context, associated property types, physical characteristics and integrity, relationship to NRHP criteria and bibliography.
  • Cultural Resource Management Plans (CRMP), Historic Property Management Plans (HRMP) or Master Planning
  • Development and execution of historic preservation training topics. Training can be given either in person or in virtual environment.
  • Ethnographic Studies: Conducting interviews with relevant resources and community members, or other ethnic groups who may have information specific to a project area. Interviews may require field visits to areas of interest within a project area or geographic landscape. Development of reports that include oral histories, ethnographic interviews, how the landscape is regarded by community members or other peoples, and management recommendations based on the informant’s perspective.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity and experience with appropriate, current computer programs and technology
  • Record of significant exhibitions and publications
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills

Education and Experience:

  • At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching American landscape history with an academic institution, and knowledge of field techniques associated with the examination and evaluation of cultural landscapes.
  • A graduate degree in American studies, art history, architectural history, or a bachelor's degree in American studies, art history, architectural history, or historic preservation with course work in American landscape history.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Pre-employment Requirements:

Emergency Response:

Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
