Characteristics of the Job Under close supervision, performs manual work & semi-skilled mechanical tasks to assist in the operation & maintenance of sewer treatment plant facilities, lift stations & collection systems. Assignments may be given in detail or may follow established routine. Limited independence is exercised; work is regularly checked by the supervisor for quality, quantity & safety of operation & care of equipment. Examples of Duties Clean tanks, channels, troughs & screens. Perform basic building & grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, painting, washing & snow removal. Gather, prepare & maintain routine operating & technical records. Operate truck for snow removal, salt spreading & material hauling; operate dump truck & end loader to load or unload materials. Collect samples within the City or industrial facilities. Assists with mechanical, plumbing or electrical repairs or maintenance. Other duties may be assigned. Training & Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent; one (1) year experience in operation & maintenance of sewer treatment facilities; experience in performing general manual work; or any equivalent combination of training & experience which provides the required knowledge, skills & abilities. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Basic knowledge of the standard practices, techniques, equipment & operation of sewer treatment plant facilities, lift stations & collection systems; basic maintenance & manual work tasks; the standard practices, methods, tools & materials of the mechanical trade; & the occupational hazards & necessary safety precautions & devices applicable to sewer maintenance work. Skill in effectively communicating with those contacted throughout the course of the workday; maintaining effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors & members of the public; & in the safe & proper operation of equipment & hand tools.
