Laborer - Maintenance Of Way

In this role, you will performs the construction, maintenance, repair and dismantling of track, roadbed structures and facilities related to railroad right-of-way. This position will be part of the union and subject to seniority within the union.

• Normal Schedule: November - April: 7:00am - 3:30pm. Availability to work four 10 hour days during summer.
• Available for Callout and standby as need arises.

What you will do

• Tasks consist of general maintenance, construction and upkeep throughout railroad right-of-way.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
• Understands, and is in compliance with, CRANDIC rules and procedures, GCOR, and FRA standards as they relate to position responsibilities. Operates power tools and various hand tools.
• Works with and around heavy equipment while performing track construction, rehabilitation and maintenance. Exposure to dirt and grease is typical in this role. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions – including snow, ice, rain, cold and heat. Personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, vests, and/or hearing protection is worn where required.

Supervision:

• Performs work under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Track and Structures or the Manager of Track and Structures.

Education Requirements

• High School Diploma Required

Preferred Experience

• Previous construction, heavy equipment operation and/or welding experience

Other Requirements

• Must possess valid Iowa driver’s license and have the ability to acquire a class D CDL within 60 days of employment.
• This job is covered by the Federal Rail Administration regulations on drug and alcohol testing (CFR 49, Part 217), and is subject to drug testing according to said regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Flexibility to work overtime and weekends.
• Demonstrated mechanical ability and aptitude, including experience using electric and/or gas powered hand tools and/or hydraulic power tools, is required.
• Ability to work effectively in a diverse represented labor group.
