Job Description
SALARY $80,743.00 - $129,075.00 Annually
CLASS DEFINITION
A Laboratory Technical Supervisor oversees the chemical testing and analyses of water or waste water in the chemical laboratory of a municipal water or waste water treatment plant. The work of this class involves supervising the activities of subordinate chemists, biologists, microbiologists and laboratory assistants.
Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek; some evening and weekend hours may be required. Work is performed in a chemical laboratory where incumbents are occasionally exposed to noxious odors, sludge, raw sewage, chlorine, and hazardous substances. Work requires minimal physical exertion.
SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have a bachelor's degree in chemistry or biology from an accredited college or university.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have four years of experience in the chemical or biological testing and analyses of water or waste water.
OR
NOTES (EQUIVALENCIES): Have a master's degree in chemistry or biology from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement. Equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the methods and techniques of chemical or biological analyses.
Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
Knowledge of EPA regulations concerning the handling and disposal of hazardous substances.
Ability to understand and interpret Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
Ability to make stoichiometric computations.
Ability to perform and supervise specialized tests.
Ability to work effectively with others.
Ability to train new employees.
Ability to maintain records and write reports.
Supervisory ability.
EXAMINATION PROCESS

NOTE: Employees assigned to this class who analyze drinking water must successfully complete periodic lab certification performance tests administered by the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
