JOB SUMMARY:


Provides functional direction and completes work duties in a clinical or anatomic laboratory section including either technical and/or non-technical staff. Responsible for ensuring that all work in the section is completed in a timely manner and consistent with all appropriate policies, procedures, regulations or laws. Responsible for working with the other Laboratory Supervisors under the direction of the Manager to ensure the smooth operations in the laboratory.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:


  • Maintenance and documentation
  • Responsible for instruments and equipment in their assigned areas including:
  • Responsible for all aspects of testing in their assigned areas including:
  • Quality Control selection, validation, and review
  • Required documentation
  • Instrument qualification
  • Calibration
  • Responsible for assigned staff. In conjunction with the Laboratory Manager, identifies staffing needs, interviewing candidates and selecting new staff. Assures staff in their section is trained and competent to perform the assays or procedures required including; completion of initial and annual performance appraisals, training and competency, retraining where required, and documentation maintained in accordance with policies and procedures. Complete performance evaluations in accordance with system policy. Facilitates continuing education. Ensures staff compliance with department and system attendance policies and ensures staff compliance with UMMS annual training and employee health requirements.
  • Troubleshooting
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Method development & validation
  • Maintains and in-depth knowledge appropriate to their assigned areas of responsibility including the use of the Laboratory Information System (LIS), identification of new technologies and assays, and working with the Medical Director and laboratory management to determine if the new technologies and/or assays are appropriate for UM SRH.
  • Participates in laboratory and system meetings, projects, and process improvements and collaborates with other Supervisors, Site Coordinators, Manager and Director in department and system initiatives and projects.
  • Acts as Technical Supervisor (CLIA ’88) in assigned sections.
  • Provide leadership to all section and laboratory staff by maintaining positive and effective interpersonal working relationships with staff, peers, and management and communicates in an effective and productive manner.
  • Manages department business including understanding, providing input to, and monitoring the department(s) budget; monitoring department costs, use of system ordering systems, maintains supplies and inventory, and meets with sales and service representative and necessary.
  • Working with vendors to ensure proper operation
  • Responsible for all policies and procedures in their assigned section including, writing, reviewing, revising and retiring procedures as necessary; and ensuring that staff understand and following the policies and procedures.


Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a science, preferred. Medical Technologist ASCP (MT) or ASCP (HT) certified or equivalent, required. Minimum of five years of clinical laboratory experience with direct experience in the area of functional clinical section(s). Must meet applicable CLIA and College of American Pathologists’ professional requirements as a Technical Supervisor. 1 year of supervisory experience preferred. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills.


The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the age of the patients served. He/she must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the necessary care as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
