Our laboratory (and UCLA) is at the leading edge of immunology research of HIV. This research is directly relevant to developing immune based treatments and vaccines. This research agenda is mission critical to the AIDS Institute and UCLA as a whole. Handling of blood specimens to preserve cells viably after freezing for future research is heavily skill dependent. The role of this position is to maintain an AIDS specimen bank and execute the research clinical trials in the laboratory. Additionaly, handle, label and ship specimens so that accurate results are produced. The Lab Assistant is also responsible for laboratory maintenance and ordering of supplies. Salary: $20.66 - $24.30 hourly
Required: Skill in communication. Speak clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information. Knowledge of medical and scientific terminology. Knowledge of personal computers, preferably IBM PC. Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive patient information. Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation sufficient to compose letters memos and transcription of patient charts. Skill in establishing and maintaining files in alpha/numerical order. Ability to work independently and follow through on projects assigned. Ability to organize and keep accurate records. Ability to obtain and maintain all UCLA and other certifications required for patient confidentiality, IBC. and any others required by policy or protocol. Ability to work under pressure and maintain good working relations with staff, faculty and patients. Ability to conduct assays up to BSL-3/2 conditions. Ability to register protocols in English to order the necessary supplies needed. Ability to maintain and respond to any alarm situations. Knowledge of OSHA regulations and Universal Precautions for handling biohazardous materials. Skill at being organized and maintaining a clean lab. Knowledge of lab safety and handling of biohazardous waste.
