Job Description
Title: Kennel Keeper Location: City Of Albuquerque Department: Animal Welfare - City of Albuquerque POSITION SUMMARY: Clean and maintain animal facilities and perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility; provide excellent animal care and customer service in accordance with the Animal Welfare Department's mission, goals and management philosophy and provide assistance to the Animal Handlers with animal care and maintenance of kennel and adoption center facilities. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receive supervision from assigned Supervisor or Manager. ESSENTIAL AND SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below) Humanely care for, delouse, and feed animals; rinse, scrub, and disinfect a variety of animal enclosures, hallways, floors, walls and isolation/quarantine areas; operate kennel laundry; prepare food; clean water and food dishes and related kennel equipment and facilities. Transport, or assist in transporting animals to various locations as needed using humane methods. Clean and maintain the Adoption Center premises including the kennels, offices and display areas. Replace burned out light bulbs. Sweep, strip, mop and refinish floors; use buffers, scrubbers, hand tools and chemical cleaning agents; wash display windows. Clean rest-rooms; scour and clean all porcelain fixtures with cleaning powder and disinfectant; check and replenish tissue, towels and soap. Collect and empty trash cans and waste baskets, remove all trash from office and public areas. Clean, scrub, rinse and disinfect a variety of animal enclosures including kennels, holding areas, hallways, floors, and walls; operate Center laundry; clean water and food dishes and related animal equipment and facilities. Wash and dust walls and doors; wash windows and window shades. Maintain adoption center cleaning and pet food inventories; provide list of needed supplies to manager. Remove, or assist in the removal, of animals and animal waste from the center as needed. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of responsibility; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Handle animals in a humane manner according to established policies and procedures. 1 1 . Adhere to safe work practices and procedures. 12. Perform other duties as assigned. SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. High school diploma or GED; and Six (6) months of animal care experience. Some facilities maintenance experience preferred. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Driver's License. Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire. Must be able to work weekends, nights and holidays. Must pass background check. PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE: Basic custodial practices General cleaning and maintenance techniques Safe use of cleaning chemicals and agents Principles and practices of humane animal handling and care Occupational hazards and standard safety practices PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITY: Perform all types of custodial and routine building maintenance tasks Operate a variety of custodial equipment in a safe and effective manner Correctly and humanely use and apply a variety of animal handling skills Learn to work independently in the absence of supervision Understand and follow oral and written instructions Communicate clearly and concisely Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation WORKING CONDITIONS: Environmental: Indoor environment; work at heights; exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, lubricants, noise, dust, and toxic fumes; requires handling of animals; subject to animal bites and scratches; exposure to a variety of domestic animals, animal body fluids, waste and infectious materials. Physical: Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending and stooping, standing and walking for prolonged periods; and moderate to heavy lifting; operating equipment and vehicles.
