Job Description
IT@JH Enterprise Directory and Messaging is seeking an IT Messaging Architect who is the enterprises foremost technical expert on email services at Johns Hopkins and works directly with the IT Operating Unit Director Enterprise Directory and Messaging in several key areas:
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Enterprise Messaging Architecture
Works in conjunction with the Enterprise Directory, Authentication, Information Security, Technical Services and various IT partners across Johns Hopkins.
Will develop a comprehensive messaging architecture that is dynamic and responsive to the escalating needs of the institution to support both on-premise and cloud hosted environments.
The Architecture will provide or integrate with numerous messaging services distributed across a variety of platforms and highly complex, multilayered systems.
Provision email accounts and the underlying infrastructure required to support the end to end, sending and receiving of millions of email messages every day.
Store instant messaging conversations allowing customers to recall important details at a future date.
Unify voice and email services featuring voice mail access using a variety of email client platforms and applications.
Security
Email Migration identifies the infrastructure and technologies required by the new email system to provide additional layers of security to protect access to sensitive data stored in the mailbox. This effort will require coordinating and collaborating with the Enterprise Directory team for the design and configuration of a customized directory environment.
The incumbent must collaborate in architecting integrated authentication solutions that will harden access and mitigate the risk from compromised account credentials.
In addition, the solutions must incorporate technologies that address different authentication requirements and limitations across various platforms.
Policies
Identifies threats and vulnerabilities targeting the messaging environment. Based on the threats and vulnerabilities, the IT Messaging Architect will implement policies, like Domain Message Authentication Reporting & Conformance (DMARC), designed to identify and protect legitimate Johns Hopkins email traffic and eliminate a bad actor's ability to spoof or impersonate by sending fraudulent emails purported to be from Johns Hopkins.
In addition, the incumbent is expected to identify sender policy solutions that protect the integrity and reputation of the Johns Hopkins email domains, as well as deliver defense in depth implementations of message hygiene tools and tactics that reduce the amount of malicious, suspicious and unsolicited email received by the Johns Hopkins Community.
Threat Awareness, Prevention & Response
I dentifies opportunities to incorporate the use of threat simulation software that provides user awareness and education and help mitigate the risk of email vector attacks, like phishing.
Will also identify protocols to respond to and reduce the damage from a compromised account or system.
Additionally, will be responsible for defining desirable outputs from the enterprise monitoring program in the form of alerts, dashboards, and reports.
Impact of Application to Organization
The efforts of the IT Messaging Architect will have an impact on all Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, students, vendors, contractors, friends, visitors, etc. The incumbent will need to help Hopkins bridge the cyber security initiatives to increase security while trying to minimize the impact on customers.
Years ago, very few faculty, staff, students and others made use of information technology on a regular basis. However, as the institution now requires employees to use a self-service payroll application to access their paystubs, e-Learning technology to complete compliance training and have access to email as a means of communication from leadership, the number of information technology users has grown significantly.
Examples of clients supported and degree of client interaction
Leadership interaction will principally be with the IT Operating Unit Director Enterprise Messaging. Incumbent will be asked to provide briefings and formal presentations, and on occasion may be asked to present to governing bodies and IT Leadership regarding specific initiatives.
There will be a good deal of peer interaction. As an IT Messaging Architect, the implementation of standards will require a great deal of collaborative work with application owners and systems administrators. The IT Messaging Architect needs to be mindful of operational needs, change management and systems lifecycle management.
Finally, it is expected that the IT Messaging Architect will coordinate work with IT partners across the organization. There will be project deliverables throughout the implementation of the messaging security solutions and architectures where the work of the Architect is responsible for deliverables.
