LUMCON (https://lumcon.edu/broberts/) , a program of the Board of Regents, as a consortium is a statewide academic endeavor to focus and strengthen the effectiveness of foundational marine science needed to address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges facing Louisiana and the nation.


LUMCON has provided unparalleled opportunities in marine science and education to the research community and public alike. Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana’s dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON is expanding its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.


Position Overview


LUMCON is seeking applicants for a highly skilled and experienced IT Director to lead LUMCON’s IT department. The IT Director will be responsible for managing all aspects of LUMCON's information technology infrastructure, systems, and services. This position requires strong technical expertise, strategic thinking, and excellent leadership skills to ensure the smooth operation of our IT department and the effective delivery of IT solutions to support the organizational objectives. The IT Director plays a critical role in driving the organization’s digital transformation, ensuring the reliability and security of our IT infrastructure, and leveraging technology to support our mission and vision.


Minimum Qualifications


  • 5+ years experience in IT.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and execution of IT initiatives aligned with business objectives.
  • Deep understanding of information security principles, practices, and industry standards.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a diverse team.
  • Familiarity with IT governance frameworks (e.g., COBIT, ITIL) and compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong project management and budgeting skills.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role within IT, with a track record of successfully managing IT operations and implementing technology strategies.
  • Proactive problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong technical expertise across a broad range of IT disciplines, including infrastructure, networks, systems, security, and software applications.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CISSP, PMP) are a plus.


Essential Duties


Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:


  • Team Leadership: Builds and manages a high-performing IT team, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Fosters a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork, creativity, and continuous improvement.
  • IT Infrastructure Management: Oversees the design, implementation, and maintenance of LUMCON's IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, storage, and security systems. Ensures the availability, performance, and scalability of IT resources to meet organizational needs.
  • Information Security: Develops and enforces security policies and procedures to safeguard the organization's data, networks, and systems from unauthorized access, threats, and vulnerabilities. Stays up to date with the latest industry standards and best practices in IT security.
  • Vendor Management: Evaluates and selects technology vendors, negotiates contracts, and manages vendor relationships to ensure timely and quality delivery of products and services. Conducts regular vendor performance reviews and assesses the alignment of vendor offerings with business needs.
  • Strategic Planning: Develops and implements an IT strategy aligned with the organization's goals and objectives. Identify and prioritize IT initiatives that will drive operational efficiency, innovation, and competitive advantage.
  • Systems and Applications: Manages the selection, implementation, and integration of software systems and applications across the organization. Collaborates with stakeholders to define requirements, evaluate solutions, and ensure seamless operation and user satisfaction.
  • IT Governance and Compliance: Establishes and maintains IT governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards. Implements controls and monitoring mechanisms to mitigate risks and ensure data privacy and integrity.
  • Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery: Develops and maintains business continuity and disaster recovery plans to minimize the impact of IT disruptions and ensure the timely recovery of critical systems and data in case of a disaster or cyber incident.
  • Budgeting and Resource Management: Develops and manages the IT department's budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources and cost-effective procurement of hardware, software, and services. Monitors expenses, tracks IT equipment and software and provides regular reports to senior management.
