Job Description

The Mental Health/AODA Intake Specialist is responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments of individuals seeking mental health/addiction services. They serve as the first point of contact, gathering information, and evaluating the immediate needs and goals of clients. The specialist must possess strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate empathy, as they will interact with individuals who may be in distress or experiencing mental health challenges. The role requires effective communication and the ability to make accurate and efficient referrals to appropriate mental health/AODA professionals or treatment programs. The Mental Health/AODA Intake Specialist plays a vital role in connecting clients to the appropriate resources and support services to facilitate their recovery journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct initial assessments: Perform thorough assessments of clients' mental health concerns, evaluating symptoms, psychosocial history, and current needs to determine appropriate services or treatment options.
  2. Client engagement and support: Engage with clients in a compassionate and nonjudgmental manner, actively listening to their concerns and providing emotional support throughout the intake process.
  3. Information gathering: Collect and record relevant demographic, medical, and psychosocial information to develop a comprehensive understanding of clients' backgrounds and mental health needs.
  4. Referral management: Collaborate with a network of mental health/AODA professionals, treatment facilities, and community organizations to make appropriate referrals based on clients' needs, preferences, and available resources.
  5. Crisis intervention: Identify and respond to clients experiencing immediate mental health crises, following established protocols to ensure their safety and well-being. Provide crisis intervention services and connect clients with emergency resources when necessary.
  6. Documentation and record keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions, assessments, and referral information while adhering to legal and ethical guidelines.
  7. Resource coordination: Stay updated on local mental health services, programs, and community resources to facilitate effective referrals and provide clients with information about support options available to them.
  8. Collaborative teamwork: Collaborate with other mental health/AODA professionals, including clinicians, therapists, and case managers, to ensure seamless coordination of care and continuity of services for clients.
  9. Continuous professional development: Stay informed about advancements in the field of mental health and addictions, attending trainings, conferences, and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills related to intake and assessment practices.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems and proficiency in documentation
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of community resources and the ability to make appropriate referrals
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Crisis intervention skills and the ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental health/addiction disorders, treatment modalities, and assessment techniques
