Job Description

The City of North Las Vegas announces a posting to create an eligibility list and to fill (3) vacancies for the classification of Inspector Trainee. The current vacancy is in the Land Development and Community Services department. The eligibility list will be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification, for up to one hundred twenty (120) days.


NOTE TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES: Pursuant to the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, non-probationary employees successfully completing the qualification assessment process will be placed on an eligibility list to be used to fill vacancies in this classification for up to one hundred and twenty (120) days.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION


  • Work Schedule – Schedule will be 4 days per week, 9 hours per day. Monday to Thursday 7 am to 4:30 pm. May be required to work emergency call outs
  • Environment – While performing the essential functions of this job the employee regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, bodily injury, risk of electrical shock, toxic or caustic chemicals, working in high precarious places, and fumes or airborne particles. Working conditions are typically noisy.

  • SELECTION PROCESS: Oral Board (Weight 100%, Passing Score 70%).
  • Pay – The starting hourly pay for this position is $28.05 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate shows the ability to make sound judgment based on code requirements. Also shows flexibility and discretion in interpreting various codes. Has good interpersonal skills working with seasoned inspectors/trainers. Acceptable level of computer skills in various software and programs. Must meet the requirements of a commercial combination inspector within 11 months of hire.


The Role

The Inspector Trainee will inspect building construction and renovation in progress and upon completion to verify continuous compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes and ordinances. Trained to perform inspections, investigate and analyze problems, and recommend solutions for more complex systems and construction.



Inspector (Trainee) This is the entry level class within the Inspector series. Employees within this class are preparing for entry into the Inspector Combination level classification and receive continuous instruction or assistance while being trained in Inspection procedures, office practices and policies.



Entry-level Inspectors shall have a minimum of one of the four certifications that are required for the Combination Inspector Certification. Employees in this class must obtain certification as a Combination Inspector within eleven (11) months of hire to pass probation. Upon successful completion of probation employee will be promoted to Inspector Combination Inspector. Failure to meet the certification requirement within eleven (11) months of hire will result in non-confirmation of employment.


Qualifications and Attributes
Education and Experience

  • Two years of journey level experience within building construction trades.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record and ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver's license.
  • Possession of a minimum of one of the four certifications (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing or Electrical) of the International Code Council (ICC) as a Commercial Inspector or the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) Commercial Inspector certifications at time of application.
  • Employees in this class must obtain certification as a Commercial Combination Inspector within eleven (11) months of hire to pass probation. Upon successful completion of probation employee will be promoted to Inspector Combination Inspector. Failure to meet the certification requirement within one year will result in non-confirmation of employment.

Note: Subsequent vacancies during the life of the eligibility list may require participation in an additional selection interview. The selection interview will be weighted 100%, requiring a passing score of 70% in order to be considered for the subsequent position vacancy
