Summary


PART TIME DAY SHIFT OPPORTUNITY

40 HOURS/2 WEEKS



Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 44-bed department where we care for over 450 ill newborns each year. Our patients are babies needing advanced care for prematurity, whole body cooling, surgery, hypoglycemia, sepsis, and more. Our NICU is a regional transport center for ill newborns.

Under direct supervision, prepares, batches, and delivers all infant feedings for NICU patients. Understands proper storage of breastmilk and adheres to sanitary requirements and standards established by regulating agencies and Hospital policies/ protocols. Practices aseptic technique. Follows recipes for milk mixtures precisely. Basic math competency is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  • Receives orders for all infant feedings requiring preparation, mixing and measurement. Verifies questionable orders with provider and/or lactation consultant.
  • Prepares and portions all feedings as ordered. Uses correct technique to measure powders and liquids. Uses clinical electronic patient information to review and update infant feeding mixtures and portions. Keeps clear filing system on recipes.
  • Prepares infant formula and breastmilk recipes accurately, following instructions and guidelines. Calculates appropriate amount of feeding required for 24 hours of infant feeding. Measures correct feeding volumes in bottles/syringes for each patient. Properly labels each portion. Stores mixed and measured infant feedings properly until delivery to the patient area.
  • Collects fresh expressed breast milk from NICU refrigerator and uses this milk for current feedings. Works with NICU lactation consultant team to rotate milk supplies per protocol for each patient.
  • Delivers feedings to unit and removes unused patient feedings in patient care area after expiration per Hospital and unit protocol.
  • Carefully monitors expiration dates for any feeding supplement product and rotates stock appropriately.
  • Catalogues temperatures of all breastmilk in NICU refrigerators/freezers. Maintains daily refrigeration and freezing equipment temperature logs.
  • Maintains sanitation in feeding preparation room as well as breastmilk refrigerator and freezer.
  • Maintains adequate supplies of prepared milk/formula for all NICU patients.
  • Operates all equipment used for preparation of feedings, including labeling system.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education:
    • High School or G.E.D.
  • Must be strong communicator, able to follow instructions and comfortable asking questions; Understands significance of proper nutrition for NICU patients; Must be detail oriented and able to focus on work; Task isolation required: one patients feeding must be completed, counters and equipment cleaned before another patients feeding preparation begun
  • Skills:
