Job Description
Job Title: Historian/Author Job Summary: This position is in support of the Publications Program, Historical Office of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). The Publications Program within the Historical Office seeks support to assist with research and writing of Volume XIII in the Secretaries of Defense Historical Series. Responsibilities Include: Working in coordination with a co-author to perform research in published literature and unclassified and classified primary source material, including records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense and other DoD elements, material from Presidential libraries and various U.S. Government agencies, and manuscript and archival material from private repositories Editing and revising manuscript chapters of other volumes in the Secretaries of Defense Historical Series Conducting oral history interviews Preparing draft chapters, preface, and bibliography based on research - including endnotes and applicable tables, charts, photographs, and captions-and reviewing and incorporating as editorial comments on previously drafted chapters Required Qualifications and Skills: Active security clearance PhD degree in history, international relations, or a related field The ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance 5+ years of experience in the history of the nation's national security policy, conflicts, foreign affairs, or governmental affairs 5+ years of research and writing experience in the fields of national security policy, conflicts, foreign affairs, or in governmental affairs This must include experience conducting research in diplomatic, defense, or military records in official national archives or in private repositories Must be able to provide 3 published, topically relevant historical articles or one book of appropriate subject matter published by a commercial or academic press or a government history office 1+ years of experience planning and preparing for oral history interviews; developing questions; coordinating directly with, or through the staff of, interviewees; and using oral history transcripts in historical analysis Experience is evidenced by formal oral history course work at the graduate level and conducting oral history interviews in support of a research project, or by employment in a position incorporating oral history as a primary duty Desired: An active Top Secret clearance Work Setting and Environment: Monday - Friday, normal working hours Work is to be performed onsite in OSD offices at the Pentagon, with potential travel for interviews and research How FedWriters Will Compensate and Appreciate You: FedWriters offers team members the opportunity to gain a lasting impression in this fast-growing small business.
