Job Description

Duties

Duties include:

  • Researching historical documents and records
  • Planning and executing special studies
  • Anticipating operational and administrative needs for the collection, development, and presentation of DOJ historical or archival information
  • Developing products that present historical synthesis concisely; clearly; and maintains proper balance and perspective without distorting the evidence
  • Locating and preserving historical agency documents and related artifacts
  • Identifing and assessing historical evidence contained in Federal record depositories
  • Reviewing and verifing sources of historical facts and develops comprehensive narrative
  • Conducting a variety of studies to support the DOJ history program

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Historian, (GS-0170-14), you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to the series and grade you are applying to.
Basic Requirement:

A. Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. Though a specific degree level isn't shown as a requirement, a master's degree or higher is preferred.

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


Specialized Experience:
To qualify for GS-14, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-13 or equivalent level. Specialized experience is defined as: 1. Conducting research through various means such as: searching files, records, archives, and library collections; identifying physical artifacts; or conducting interviews with individuals having knowledge of the events under study; AND
2. Prepare authoritative historical publications and other documentary materials.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
