Job Description

Duties

  • Address multiple entities such as civic groups, anthropological societies, local or state officials, professional organizations, etc., on behalf of an organization.
  • Practice clear and effective communication with interdisciplinary teams, and/or external stakeholders.
  • Plan, organize, and/or evaluate historic resources according to guidelines.
  • Develop or Review determinations of eligibility (DOEs) and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination packages, and Historic American Building Survey (HABS)/Historic American Engineering Records (HAER) packages.
  • Develop or Deliver briefings for management and external audiences.
  • Ensure project compliance with appropriate laws and regulations on matters pertaining to historic preservation strategies.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • May be required to lift and move moderately heavy objects of no more than 25 lbs (i.e., archival documents and record storage boxes).
  • Work requires some physical exertion such as walking, bending, crouching, stopping, stretching, climbing, or similar activities.
  • Participation in site work requires more than normal office activities such as walking distances of a few miles over rocky, hilly, or muddy terrain carrying small and lightweight equipment and personal items.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Minimum Qualifications GS-09:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing archival research using maps, databases, state historic preservation offices (SHPO) resources, and/or historical documents for historic preservation or archaeological projects; creating and/or reviewing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), Historic American Building Surveys (HABS) and/or Historic American Engineering Records (HAER) documentation; and performing historic architectural surveys and/or background research. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: history.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Minimum Qualifications GS-11:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing archival research using maps, databases, state historic preservation offices (SHPO) resources, and/or historical documents for historic preservation projects; creating and/or reviewing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), Historic American Building Surveys (HABS) and/or Historic American Engineering Records (HAER) documentation; performing historic architectural surveys and/or background research; interpreting and/or applying Secretary of Interior (SOI) standards, guidelines, and/or applicable historic resource laws and regulations.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: History.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
