The histology/immunohistochemistry technician will assist veterinary pathologists in diagnosing animal diseases by the processing of tissues submitted to the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL) for histology, histochemistry (special stains), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and in situ hybridization (ISH., i.e., RNAscope). The incumbent will perform various tasks, including processing and preparing various patient tissue specimens (i.e., animal tissues from all species, including primate and human tissues) for microscopic examination and interpretation by the pathologist and residents. This may include logging, batching, grossing, trimming surgical biopsies, tissues from necropsies, and deer tissues for chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing, tissue processing, paraffin embedding, sectioning, mounting, and performing staining procedures (i.e., Hematoxylin & Eosin [H&E]) staining, special staining, IHC staining, or RNAscope), operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation, record keeping, billing, entering data and documentation with minimum supervision, and must demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment. The job duties are highly specialized and requires attention to details, experience in thin sectioning of paraffin embedded or frozen tissue sections with finger dexterity, ability to comprehend and communicate instructions, ability to follow laboratory protocols and procedures, skill in the use of computers and related software applications.
Job Responsibilities:
30% - Learn to process and embed tissues (paraffin and frozen) and prepare microscopic slides for LADDL pathologists or researchers. Essential functions include preparing paraffin tissue blocks and OCT embedding and frozen sectioning (cryotomy) of specimens from necropsy, mail-in, biopsy and research. In addition to paraffin infiltration and embedding of the tissues, cut tissue blocks using microtome, stain (i.e., Hematoxylin and Eosin) and coverslip slides.
20% - Learn to operate and maintain equipment, maintain chemical inventory and adhere to LSU Biological Safety Policies of Environmental Health and Safety, as well as AAVLD quality assurance standards by maintaining SOPs. Essential functions will include to follow laboratory safety procedures, operate histology and IHC equipment safely and correctly, perform daily and weekly maintenance of equipment, maintain clean laboratory environment, make sure all formalinized tissues and other chemicals are stored properly, file paraffin and frozen blocks and slides, and prepare lab reagents and complete other duties assigned by the pathology or IHC section head or the lab director. Operate and maintain the digital imager and perform slide scanning.
15% - Learn to trim formalinized necropsy, biopsy, mail-in tissue specimens and deer tissues for chronic wasting disease (CWD) and place in labeled cassettes. Match all necropsy, biopsy and mail-in tissues with corresponding paperwork. Perform measurements of specimens, tissues, structures, and lesions as needed. Record measurements as instructed by the pathologists. Keep records by entering data in log books and computer. Load tissues into the automated processor at the end of the day.
10% - The incumbent will learn to perform all the following job duties under supervision of the other senior histology technicians or the lab supervisor, and expected to be competent in basic techniques in 2 years. The training include the following: Learn to perform variety of technical procedures resulting in creation of microscopic slide preparations, follow quality control, quality assurance, safety, and biosafety/infection control procedures, Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, maintain appropriate inventory of supplies, maintain effective communication and working relationships with all laboratory personnel, other disciplines, and external customers. 10% - Learn to perform manual and automated IHC staining according to established protocols using both manual and automated instrument procedures. Check the quality of the stain with appropriate controls. Label slides with case numbers and delivers the slides to pathologists. Keep records by entering data in logbooks and computer.
10% - Provide backup support (floater) for other histology technicians when needed. This includes helping with trimming formalinized tissues, paraffin infiltration and embedding of the tissues, cut tissue blocks using microtome, stain (i.e., Hematoxylin and Eosin and special) and coverslip slides. Label slides with case numbers and delivers the slides to pathologists.
5% - Maintain highest professional standards, promote excellent customer service to internal and external constituents and commit to providing excellent diagnostic service to the LADDL clients. Perform other duties assigned by the pathology or histology section head laboratory supervisor or the LADDL director. The percent of each job duties listed above can change at the discretion of the histology section head laboratory supervisor. In addition to a typical work schedule, may be scheduled to work weekends, work split shifts, overtime, and holidays, and attend scientific meetings or training, as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma and 1-2 years of experience.
Degree Substitute - Associate Degree
Specific Experience - Diagnostic or research laboratory experience, or veterinary technician experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related field and 2-5 years of experience.
Specific Experience - Diagnostic laboratory experience, histology or clinical pathology laboratory experience, other lab experience or veterinary technician experience
Special and Physical Qualifications:
Essential Personnel - This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.
Required to be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, climbing, twisting, pushing/pulling, and grasping.
Must be able to distinguish between different colors accurately and have near-vision acuity at 20 inches or less. Must be comfortable and knowledgeable about handling hazardous materials (e.g., blood and bodily fluids as potential sources of bacterial and viral pathogens of humans, including prions and zoonotic agents).
