Job Description

The Focused Ultrasound Laboratory in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the University of Utah advances focused ultrasound technologies for the treatment of cancer, chronic pain, neurological conditions, and other applications with activities including medical device design and prototyping, modeling, data analysis, image processing, preclinical investigation, and development and translation of new clinical applications.
Job Summary
The Focused Ultrasound Lab is looking for a detail-oriented histology technician with an interest in biomedical research to join our interdisciplinary team. You will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing animal tissue specimens for microscopic examination and quantitative digital analysis.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Maintain lab work area by performing preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment and keeping the work area clean and orderly.
  • Identify significant tissue elements microscopically to determine quality of staining.
  • Operate digital slide scanner, including loading slides and performing quality assurance checks for image quality during acquisition.
  • Manage all laboratory equipment including following and revising standard operating procedures documentation, performing regular quality control, and documenting maintenance schedules ensuring equipment is operating properly.
  • Performing supply inventory and communicating needs to the lab manager.
  • Tracks lab work in progress and deadlines and provides regular reports to supervisor.
  • Perform routine and special histochemical stains and immunofluorescent staining procedures to aid or facilitate diagnoses on tissue specimens. Transport slides, tissues, or blocks to various buildings within campus.
  • Attend all lab meetings, track action items and deadlines.
  • Perform tissue grossing, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and a variety of staining procedures as required.
  • Perform benchtop microtomy to render quality sections for treatment assessment and digital
  • Analysis.
Comments

Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree in a biological science or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) certification as a Histology Technician is preferred.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
