Job Description

THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.


Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Vocational or technical training in ASE Medium/Heavy Truck
  • High School Diploma or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

Experience

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

  • One (1) year of experience as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Mechanic B or related mechanical work for a period of five (5) years
  • Levels AA
    • One (1) year of experience as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Mechanic A or related mechanical work for a period of six (6) years
  • Six (6) years’ experience as a Heavy Truck and Equipment Mechanic or related field and successfully pass written and practical testing
  • Level C
    • One (1) year of experience as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Mechanic D or related mechanical work for a period of three (3) years
  • Level D
    • Experience as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Mechanic or related mechanical work for a period of two (2) years
  • One (1) year of experience as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Mechanic D or related mechanical work for a period of three (3) years
  • Levels AA Lead
  • Experience as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Mechanic or related mechanical work for a period of two (2) years
  • Levels A
    • One (1) year of experience as a Heavy Truck & Equipment Mechanic B or related mechanical work for a period of five (5) years
  • Level B

Certification/Licensure

  • Must have the required ASE Medium heavy Truck Certification of T2, T3, T4, T5, T6 and/or T7
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper endorsements (passenger, Air Brakes, and Towing, Hazmat and Tanker)

Summary

The Heavy Truck and Equipment Mechanic maintains the Authority's heavy trucks and equipment and is responsible for diagnosing problems, and aligning, inspecting, overhauling and modifying vehicles within prescribed manufacturers' and Authority guidelines, diagrams and manuals.

Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

“AA Lead” Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.

Essential Functions

  • Inspects assigned vehicles systems and components (e.g. brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition) to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
  • Performs major repairs, inspections, adjustments, and maintenance on Authority heavy trucks and equipment in accordance with manufacturers' maintenance instructions, operations manuals, diagrams and schematics, ensuring that vehicles and equipment can operate in a safe manner.
  • Corrects and adjusts steering geometry of vehicles.
  • Responds to and assists in emergencies related to securing or safeguarding Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) vehicles and equipment, fire/life/safety, and snow emergencies, to ensure safe operation of buses on the roadways.
  • Prepares written materials such as, repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, and warranty claims, to document activities, provide written reference and comply with mandated requirements.
  • Utilizes hand and power tools, precision test equipment, test panels dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, and oxy-acetylene cutting and welding equipment, for to determine the need for and perform necessary vehicle repairs and/or replacements.

Other Functions

  • Operates Authority vehicles as required.
  • Attends unit in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering required information to perform job function.
