Job Description

This position, located in Charleston, SC, is accountable for supporting field operations at marine or railroad project locations for Russell Marine, LLC. Employees operate a variety of equipment and trucks in the construction or repair of marine terminals, dock facilities, and/or railroad bridges. The heavy equipment operator typically works closely with the foreman, pile drivers, welders, laborers, and other skilled or semi-skilled craft workers.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Works as assigned by the foreman to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new marine or railroad construction projects.
  • Ensures heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
  • Performs daily safety and maintenance checks; participates in routine maintenance.
  • Understands the operational limits and specifications of the equipment to which they are assigned.
  • Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed. Brings problems to the attention of the foreman, safety director, or HR manager
  • Participates in safety and environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of state/federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
  • This position frequently requires long hours and weekend work; travel may be required; some out-of-town and overnight travel may be expected.
  • Works with and assists crew in excavation activities which may include: hoisting material, tools, equipment, and/or any related work with other heavy equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Responsible and accountable for employee’s own personal safety, the safety of all co-workers, and any others the employee comes in contact.
  • Cleans heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required; advises foreman of any requirements for maintenance or repairs.
  • Operates trucks and construction power equipment such as mechanized broom, backhoe, track hoe, man-lift, dump truck, road grader, front-end loader, bulldozer, hydraulic excavators, and/or other heavy equipment as assigned and based on capabilities.
  • Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the moving, loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Judges distances and slopes accurately, ensures quick connect attachments are connected properly.
  • Operates assigned heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent; or minimum of six months to one-year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training which provides the necessary heavy equipment operations skills, knowledge and abilities is required.
The employee must demonstrate:
  • Competencies: stress management/composure, teamwork, results-driven
  • Knowledge of truck and equipment safety, operation of front-end loaders, bulldozers, motor graders, track hoes, and/or other pieces of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and make decisions based on safety and operational standards of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and regularly works in outside weather conditions.
The individual must properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, reflective vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being conducted.
In addition, heavy equipment operators must also be capable of:
  • Climbing vertical ladders of a height of 6ft or greater.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; 20/20 vision (naturally or with corrective lenses).
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
  • Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
  • Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Accessing and exiting machines safely.
  • Lifting objects of minimum of 10 lbs with maximum single-person lift limit of 50 lbs; frequent lifting and carrying.
  • Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
