Note: this position maybe virtually located within the Duke Energy enterprise's geographic regions.
This position provides health and safety consultation as a subject matter expert in one or more specific areas of technical expertise (i.e. fall protection, asbestos, hazardous energy). The position is considered a subject matter expert and performs duties commensurate with the designation including technical health & safety program development and implementation using project management principals and skills. This position also investigates and solves health and safety issues and concerns and provides guidance and support to regional health & safety professionals. Specific knowledge may be required in the following areas: behavioral safety, construction safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, industrial safety, fire protection, injury management, public safety, and various technical subspecialties, such as root cause analysis, etc. Performs data analysis and makes recommendations to prevent new or recurring accidents. Reviews proposed and existing health & safety standards, regulations, and guidelines to understand the impact on company programs and facility operations. Understands health and safety laws and regulations, industry best practices and how they may impact company operations. With guidance provides support to ensure that company operations are in compliance with federal, state and local health and safety laws and regulations as well as corporate policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Supports department’s health and safety goals, strategies, programs, and processes by serving as subject matter experts for H&S technical program & compliance issues. Reviews and understands new regulatory requirements and assists in development of guidance for Duke Energy on how to comply. Reviews proposed state and federal regulatory requirements and provides Duke Energy comments to help influence proposed rules. Works with others to ensure that Duke Energy standard work procedures address H&S compliance guidance. Supports Duke Energy participation on various internal industry committees and steering teams.
Participates in health and safety activities that require technical knowledge in order to provide solutions to health & safety problems.
Works with others to ensure accomplishment of work unit goals and maintain company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communicating, and scheduling of health and safety work activities.
Works with others to support the department’s routine and special projects in order to accomplish business objectives.
Strives to continually develop and improve job-related, technical knowledge and skill to ensure that department expectations are met.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Health & Safety, Science, Engineering or closely related OR
HS/GED and 4 plus years work related experience in lieu of a bachelor's degree.

Master's degree in Health & Safety, Business, Science or Engineering

  • Concept knowledge of H&S regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices, quality assurance principles, and auditing principles.
  • Track record of proactive approach to developing creative solutions to problems.
  • Understands systems and processes needed to comply with health and safety laws and regulations, corporate policies, goals, and targets.
  • General technical skills in H&S areas.
  • Understands project management concepts.
  • Experience in supporting H&S compliance at multiple facilities within multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
  • Very good communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus.
  • Has worked with others from diverse groups to achieve a common goal or objective.
Working Conditions
  • Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.
  • Vehicle travel involved to field location; typical travel safety factors.
