The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Direct Services, the Health Promotion Specialist (HPS) will provide daily oversight for all peer education and related health education initiatives. The HPS will conduct one-on-one student support services to foster a sense of community and belonging, enhance awareness and utilization of campus resources, facilitate workshops, training, department events, and other operational needs. This position will supervise undergraduate and graduate student staff, and work in conjunction with the Director, Direct Services to plan, implement, and evaluate peer education and health education initiatives. The HPS will work collaboratively across Columbia Health and Columbia University to meet the needs of all students. This is an essential on-site role with some potential for hybrid work. Some evening and weekend hours required.
Responsibilities
Peer Education and Health Education (50%)
In partnership with the Director, Direct Services, oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of theory- and evidence-informed peer education and health education practices/services.
Assume functional and procedural supervision including recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, training, scheduling, and oversight of Certified Peer Educators (CPE).
Provide one-on-one health education visits and assist the Direct Services team with one-on-one and small group educational sessions.
Continually document case notes and referrals.
Monitor data tracking, evaluation, and metrics. Recommend data-informed opportunities to advance department, division, and University goals.
Serve as key resource and subject matter expert to internal and external campus stakeholders.
Monitor and triage all peer education and health education related inquiries for all stakeholders.
Administration and Capacity Building (30%)
Assist the Director with periodic reviews of peer education and health education related data and policies.
Write and submit periodic and annual reports on program progress and outcomes, including developing proposals for enhancements or changes as appropriate.
Support the research, writing, editing, and updating of web-based related content
Develop proposals for programs and other interventions that are aligned with departmental goals and objectives and the overall campus community.
Develop and maintain relationships with numerous stakeholder constituencies on campus, including, but not limited to, Undergraduate Student Life, University Life, Athletics and Physical Education, Columbia University schools and departments, Columbia Health staff, and student organizations.
Serve on committees and task forces and participate in professional group meetings.
In collaboration with the Director and Columbia Health Administration, write and submit grant proposals.
In partnership with the Director, design and conduct assessment, evaluation, and research.
Other Direct Services (15%)
In partnership with Director, identify and facilitate professional development for team members on peer education and health education including assessing needs of staff, organizing and managing trainings in collaboration with other departments, and continually evaluating program efforts.
Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate workshops and trainings for students and other key University stakeholders.
Co-facilitate, organize, implement, and evaluate pet therapy and other large-scale health promotion-related events for the university community.
Provide cross-coverage and backup assistance for Alice! Health Promotion, Columbia Health, and Columbia University programs/initiatives, as needed/assigned
Perform other duties as assigned (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent experience required.
Minimum 2 years of closely-related experience, preferably in planning, implementing, and evaluating evidence and theory-informed health education and peer education efforts.
Demonstrated knowledge of health promotion, health education, and peer education frameworks, theory-and evidence-informed practice, and ability to translate and apply theory and evidence with a university population.
Ability to design health promotion initiatives that reflect the social, cultural, political, and economic diversity of students.
Demonstrated understanding of college students' development issues, health needs, and interests.
Strong writing, editing, group facilitation, public speaking, and communication skills.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and follow-up skills.
Strong computer skills required, including PC literacy in a Windows environment, Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to learn new technology quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in health promotion/education, social work, or other related field.
Demonstrated project management experience.
Experience with direct student support including trauma-informed practices and motivational interviewing.
Experience in web site content production and management, program development, marketing, evaluation, and grant writing.
National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) or Real Balance Certified Wellness & Health Coach (CWHC).
CHES/MCHES or CPH certified (or eligible with intent to become certified).
Other Requirements
Some evening and weekend hours required.
