SUMMARY:
The Health Insurance Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the health insurance claim process for student-athletes, including obtaining referrals and prior authorizations, claim preparation and submission and refund requests, serving as liaison between Student Health Insurance Program Hard Waiver Program and Student-Athletes, and managing the athletic department’s secondary insurance program. This position also provides administrative support for the Sports Medicine department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate all aspects of the health insurance claim process for student-athletes
- Investigate potential improper claim payments and pursue refunds as appropriate.
- Assist in the review of existing health insurance policies prior to their renewal.
- Coordinate medical claim submissions with University secondary insurance and student-athlete’s primary insurance.
- Coordinate certification of primary insurance status for student-athletes
- Review student-athlete medical claims submitted for reimbursement through University of Richmond.
- Manage Student Health Insurance Hard Waiver process for student-athletes
- Act as liaison between student- athlete’s parents, team physician’s office, providers and insurers to facilitate the claim submission/payment process, as well as to educate the student-athletes, parents as to the process.
- Manage the purchase of primary insurance policies for uninsured, underinsured, and international student-athletes
- Facilitate private practice administrators with obtaining prior authorizations and referrals for student-athlete specific benefit information from primary insurance carrier to ensure proper claim payments.
- Implement and process best practices in cost containment for athletic insurance.
- Develop and issue health insurance related correspondence for student-athletes/ parents, providers, and insurance carriers.
- Develop, document and maintain insurance-related procedures specific to the insurance coordinator position.
Perform clerical duties as assigned by Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine/SA Well-being
- Assist in reconciling various Sports Medicine Department accounts and other clerical tasks, as requested.
- Maintain appropriate records and student-athlete files.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent communication, organization, and intrapersonal skills
- Proficient in Microsoft office
- Proficient in clerical work
- Proficient in health insurance claim processing
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience with clerical work required
- High School Diploma
- Experience with Health Insurance Administration preferred but not required.
WORK HOURS:
- Part-time, non-exempt position
- Partial leave accruals (no health insurance)
- Approximately 20 hours per week during business hours Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 3 (Hiring Range $16.37 to $19.24 per hour)
