Summary


This position will be based in one of InterDigital’s offices in the United States and will include periodic travel to InterDigital’s other global locations. The successful candidate will leverage their strong managerial skills to lead an international team of highly skilled IP professionals. Reporting directly to our Vice President, Deputy General Counsel - Head of Intellectual Property and Litigation (“Head of IP and Litigation”), this person will have responsibility for executing InterDigital’s global patent strategy to advance current and future business objectives and contributing to the development of that strategy.


This candidate will combine their significant legal and technical expertise to achieve strategic metrics and work closely with Research & Innovation stakeholders to assist in developing InterDigital’s technology roadmap based on the desired long-term portfolio composition.


Responsibilities


  • Oversee and execute all patent disclosures and licensing declarations that may be required in conjunction with the Company’s participation in relevant standards organizations and industry consortia
  • Partner with the Research & Innovation team by providing meaningful patent input and counsel to help inform research decisions and the development of technology roadmaps
  • Review, revise and help the Head of IP develop IP strategies using a data-driven approach
  • Achieve strategic metrics aligned to technology, annual filing goals, annual issuance, and geographic goals
  • Monitor various patent-related industry data and trends, providing analyses and reports to various internal stakeholders
  • Support corporate M&A activities by providing patent input and due diligence support, and oversee the formal transfer of all acquired and/or divested patent rights
  • Review and provide input on certain IP-related provisions various legal documents, including license and patent transfer agreements
  • Support the Company’s patent defense from third party challenges, including US IPRs, European oppositions, and Chinese invalidation proceedings
  • Provide patent and technical expertise in support of the Company’s patent litigation activities, including identifying and producing patents for potential use in future enforcement actions
  • Oversee the team responsible for managing the filing and prosecution of the Company’s global patent portfolio, ensuring a high-quality, cost-effective work product that aligns with corporate strategy
  • Manage the evaluation of IPR policies and guidelines relating to participation, or prospective participation, in various standards organizations, including supporting advocacy efforts to foster policies compatible with research organizations that rely on patent licensing
  • Provide internal reporting and strategic input regarding patent matters to the Head of IP and Litigation and executive management
  • Manage distribution of prosecution work between outside firms and internal counsel in an optimal manner and manage cost and quality of deliverables
  • Work closely with researchers and others to properly harvest, evaluate, and act on all inventions developed within the Company


Qualifications
  • Respect for others, including listening to others and assuming best intentions
  • Ability to demonstrate improvements in patent processes
  • Familiarity with ETSI participation and procedures
  • A minimum of 12-15 years of experience in industry or functional area
  • Ability to communicate vision, solve problems, and execute on goals
  • Ability to process and leverage data to inform decision making
  • JD from an accredited law school and membership in good standing from at least one state bar is preferred
  • Ability to set and manage expectations across multiple stakeholders
  • Previous track record of success managing strategies for a large patent portfolio
  • Highly flexible and adaptable to changing structures and priorities
  • Strong background in telecommunications and/or video technologies (4G, 5G, NextGen, HEVC, VVC, etc.)
  • Ability to multitask, probe, analyze, and problem-solve issues with minimal guidance
  • Ability to demonstrate improvements made to such a portfolio
