Grounds Supervisor (Zoo)

Job Summary: The position of Grounds Supervisor exists to perform and ensure timeliness and quality of all ground’s maintenance objectives through daily supervision of FT and seasonal employees in the Grounds Department. The position schedules, instructs, trains, assigns, and follows-through with employees and assists in timekeeping, purchasing, and other administrative duties as required. The position maintains and enhances Grounds assets of the Zoo and ensures a quality environment for guests and employees of the Zoo, including providing educational information regarding the Zoo’s Grounds Operation.
Role Responsibilities:
  • Plan, design, procure: Plan, design, and procure the necessary resources to allow for successful routine grounds maintenance and special projects that enhance Zoo Grounds.
  • Record Keeping: Assist with maintaining records of equipment, products, and services vital to the Grounds Department.
  • Other: Participate in continuing education opportunities, conduct tours of or provide information on Zoo Grounds Operations, oversee Horticulture or Forestry when another Supervisor is not on-site, other administrative or working assignments as needed to maintain Zoo. Act as weekend rotating grounds and horticulture supervisor. Fill in as supervisor for Horticulture / Forestry as required.
  • Grounds maintenance: Grounds maintenance including road, fencing, landscape, and animal areas cleanup and repair, garbage and recycling collection, preparation for special events. Operation and light maintenance of all Grounds vehicles and equipment. Seasonal cleanup of Grounds including leaf collection and snow removal.
  • Leadership & Human Resources: Supervise the work and performance of the Grounds section, providing leadership through motivation, engagement, feedback, support and development. Maximize employee and team effectiveness. Schedule and direct work assignments and authorize time recording. Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, and evaluation of the team. Maintain a positive culture of collaboration, accountability, and respectful behavior.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Valid WI Driver’s License with WI CDL class B no air brake restriction
  • WI CDL class A - Preferred
  • At least High School Diploma/GED or College Degree of Bachelor’s in Landscape Horticulture, Natural Sciences, Engineering or similar
  • At least Two (2) year or more experience in Grounds landscape maintenance
  • Current Resident of Wisconsin
  • Previous experience leading others in day to day work is strongly preferred
License: Preferred
WI Pesticide applicator license 3.0.
