Montgomery Parks- Horticulture Forestry and Environmental Education Division is currently seeking a motivated, highly organized, and professional Greenhouse Grower to perform a broad range of Greenhouse work for Brookside Gardens, a horticulture display garden located in Wheaton, Maryland. The potential candidate should be a highly collaborative team member that will put Brookside Gardens’ mission first and help to deliver remarkable experiences to our guests. The Greenhouse Grower is responsible for producing high quality annuals, perennials, tropical and woody plants to support the display gardens, conservatories, landscapes, education programs and gift shops. Our growing facilities include a new 11,000 square foot greenhouse, an older 6,000 square foot greenhouse, plus several outdoor growing areas.
This position reports directly to the Greenhouse Production Supervisor.
Throughout the year, Brookside Gardens hosts more than 800,000 visitors, many at engaging programs and events for children and adults, including the summer live butterfly exhibit and winter light display. Senior Greenhouse Technician, Grade H16 ($43,586-$60,389-$77,192)
What the job will involve -

  • Produce all seasonal annuals, perennials, and tropical plants used throughout the gardens.
  • Maintain accurate records, files and inventories for plant propagation, plant labels, grow lights, and crop production.
  • Maintain healthy stock plants and rotating greenhouse collections.
  • Receive seeds, plugs, herbaceous and woody plant material for production.
  • Use IPM practices to identify, monitor and manage pests, diseases, and weeds.
  • Monitor greenhouse temperatures, humidity, and moisture levels.
  • Assist and make recommendations coordinating a biological control program.
  • Receive and stock materials and supplies to support production operations.
Important Skills and Characteristics
  • Some evening and weekend work is required, including assisting with special events.
  • Proficient knowledge of plant identification, greenhouse control systems, plant cultural requirements, and disease/pest recognition.
  • Willingness to share horticultural knowledge with visitors, volunteers, and staff in informal settings and through formally scheduled programs
  • Organized, reliable, accurate and detail oriented with ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in all weather conditions. Working in extreme high and low temperatures, apply pesticides, operate equipment, interact with visitors in a formal/informal setting, stoop, bend, stretch, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Knowledge of diverse plant material for indoor and outdoor display gardens and exhibits.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including use of Microsoft Office suite and other specialized programs.
Principal Greenhouse Technician, Grade H18 ($49,361-$68,390-$87,419)
What the job will involve -
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in all weather conditions. Working in extreme high and low temperatures, apply pesticides, operate equipment, interact with visitors in a formal/informal setting, stoop, bend, stretch, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Monitor greenhouse temperatures, humidity, and moisture levels.
  • Use IPM practices to identify, monitor and manage pests, diseases, and weeds
  • Coordinate a complex schedule of crop production for conservatory displays, special events, outdoor seasonal displays, and gift shops.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Maryland Pesticide Applicators license or other state.
  • Multilingual
  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible experience in growing ornamental crops in a production greenhouse.

Minimum Qualifications

Principal Greenhouse Technician, Grade H18 ($49,361 - $87,419)
1. Associate of Arts Degree in Horticulture or related area plus three years of progressively responsible gardening and greenhouse/horticultural /nursery experience, or
2. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience in horticultural, greenhouse or nursery work.
3. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations , suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
4. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's certification.
5. Pass commission medical examination.
6. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may
require:
a) U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant and Animal Protection Service Permit, for
acquiring and maintaining live exhibits upon appointment, or within 6 months.
b) Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsement upon appointment,
or within 6 months.

Senior Greenhouse Technician, Grade H16 ($43,586 -$77,192
)
