Job Description

Position Objective and Summary:

The Grant Writer researches, cultivates, engages, and stewards units of government to support and grow UCAN programs for youth and families. This position is charged with maintaining a defined list of existing funder agencies while executing grants and contracts to support program needs, aligning the growth plans of different UCAN departments of the organization as well as the organization’s strategic plan. This position communicates continuously with UCAN Senior Leadership to assess funding opportunities.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Grant Writing

  • Completes data requests and other information pertinent to potentially securing government.
  • Research available funding sources, their timing and requirements.
  • Reporting back to funders in a timely fashion or accordance to the Grant Agreement
  • Communicates and works closely with various levels of management to assess the needs and services of UCAN programs.
  • Responsible for meeting grant deadlines and other requirements in the grant process.
  • Submits grant applications to governmental for financial support for UCAN programs.
  • Develops effective grant objectives, budget justifications and evaluation techniques in concert with UCAN Quality Improvement staff, Finance staff and program leadership.
  • Maintains record keeping system to track grant deadlines, dates and future activities required to secure funding.

Funding Process Management

  • Communicates information from committee and coalition participation to enhance UCAN’s services, applications for funding, and program sustainability.
  • Research and accesses relevant and requested information and data to prepare for and enhance funding conversations and opportunities.
  • Facilitates relationship management.
  • Tracks the submission of requested documents, their receipt and acceptance to ensure program compliance and that any adjustments are met.
  • Attends relevant meetings regarding proposals and funding opportunities for grants with government entities and Foundations.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of UCAN programs and how various programs can be woven together to maximize funding opportunities.

  7. Responds to UCAN staff service providers and other stakeholders in a timely manner and ensures follow-up to adequately address their need.
  • Performs other related tasks as required or assigned.

Education/Job Experience/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 1 - 3 years’ documented success in grants management and solicitation, with documented evidence of success securing annual and multi-year grants and contracts.

Special Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Car and valid Illinois driver’s license and insurance required.
  • Understanding and appreciation of UCAN’s mission.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • High-level motivation and ability to work independently.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Demonstrated ability to describe complex themes in a concise manner.
  • Full-to-expert proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to interpret budgets and organization financial statements.
  • Is open and respectful of cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of clients and is willing and competent to work with a diverse client population.
  • A strong understanding of human services and not-for-profit agencies.
  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Ability to network comfortably with government partners at all levels.
  • Working knowledge of the child welfare system.
