Job Description

The Grant Writer for our organization is responsible for researching, writing, and submitting grant proposals, contracts, and reports to secure funding for the organization's programs and operations. They work closely with program staff to gather information and data and develop relationships with funders and foundations. The Grant Writer must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be highly organized, and be able to manage multiple deadlines.


Success in this role would be securing funding through successful grant applications, meeting and/or exceeding fundraising goals, maintaining positive relationships with funders and foundations, and creating profitable partnerships by securing contracts with both for-profit and nonprofit entities. The Grant Writer should also be able to identify and pursue new grant and contract opportunities that align with the organization's mission and programs. The Grant Writer works closely with program staff and executive leadership to ensure that the organization has the resources it needs to achieve its mission and goals.


Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write proposals, reports, and supporting documents based on the funding requirements of the organization in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends and best practices in grant writing and fundraising for nonprofits as well as for-profits.
  • Review grant budgets for accuracy and compliance and at times support in budget development.
  • Review and recommend options for the continuous improvement of policies, procedures, system enhancements in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery and administration and monitoring of projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Manage the proposal application process from start to finish.
  • Maintain proficient knowledge of the organization's history, programs, and operations.
  • Collaborate with other departments in order to identify funding needs and opportunities and to gather information and data for grant and contract applications.
  • Provide ad-hoc training on the project life cycle, policies and procedures, and system processes to newly hired program staff.
  • Research and identify grant, funding, and contract opportunities for the organizations from private funders, government, and non-government agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of all grant applications and communications and submit reports related to grant and government contract opportunities.
  • Analyze budget and expenditure reports and ensures compliance with IRS and foundation-specific regulations for assigned grants.
  • Provide clear, concise instruction on grant administration policies and procedures to both grantees and staff.
  • Maintain positive relationships with funders and other stakeholders.


Job Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with and proficiency in navigating grant research tools to ensure our organizations pursue relevant private, state, and federal grant opportunities.
  • Demonstrated strong writing, copy editing, and analytical abilities with the ability to compose letters, complete grant applications, prepare grant reports, and make effective and persuasive presentations to internal and external constituents.
  • Must be an individual who embraces diversity and fosters inclusion in all aspects of life.
  • Initiative-taker who has the ability to manage time effectively and work on multiple complex assignments at one time.
  • Familiarity with concepts relating to financial management and reporting, compliance, fundraising, public relations, marketing, and communications.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to communicate both verbally and in writing and be comfortable communicating with all levels, internally and externally in a professional, respectful, and collaborative manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks, work under deadlines, and work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with using a database system and maintaining grant records within a central donor database.
  • Practiced and superb interpersonal skills with the ability to listen carefully and patiently, and thoughtfully respond to internal and external constituent questions or resolve concerns.
  • Ability to interpret grant reporting requirements and convey impact data in a precise, accurate, and compelling narrative to demonstrate results.
  • Strong organizational skills, including follow-up and attention to detail.


Minimum Requirements:

  • 2+ years of grant writing experience.
  • Experience in using computers and various grant management software and databases, i.e. Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), SharePoint, VISIO, Grammarly, etc.
  • Experience in grant writing, preferably with both for-profit and non-profit organizations.
  • Must have a grant portfolio that includes funded grants.
  • Grant writing and Business proposal writing: 1 year (Required)
  • Working with a Nonprofit Organization: 1 year (Required)
  • Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent in education and experience.


Working Environment:

  • Ability to work full-remote, on-site, or a hybrid attendance model.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.


Physical Demands

  • Requires occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.
  • Requires long periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer.


Job Types: Part-time, Contract


Salary: $20.00 - $40.00 per hour
