JOB DESCRIPTION:

NORC at the University of Chicago is currently seeking qualified Graduate Research Assistants to support research efforts in our Chicago Loop and Hyde Park, IL offices. The Graduate Research Assistant will support NORC’s National Social Life Health and Aging Project (NSHAP).


DEPARTMENT:

The Academic Research Centers (ARC) is a community of researchers and programs covering a variety of substantive domains and exemplifying NORC’s commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence and research innovation. The ARC brings substantive expertise and collaborative infrastructure to theoretically driven and multimodal research. The ARC collaborates with multi-disciplinary research from the University of Chicago and other research institutions by collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data; providing methodological and statistical expertise; and facilitating pre- and post-award management. ARC’s research staff collaborates jointly with social scientists, physicians, and other experts in an open, cooperative working environment.

The National Social Life Health and Aging Project (NSHAP) is seeking qualified part-time undergraduate research assistants and graduate research analysts. NSHAP is a longitudinal, population-based study of health and social factors. The project examines the well-being of older, community-dwelling Americans using interview and biological data on multiple domains including physical morbidities, medication use, cognitive function, emotional health, sensory function, health behaviors, sexuality, relationship satisfaction, and social connectedness. The interdisciplinary investigator team consists of faculty from: the Departments of Sociology, Health Studies, Human Development, and Psychology; the Departments of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine at the Pritzker School of Medicine; and the Harris School of Public Policy Studies. Housed within NORC and funded by the National Institute on Aging, NSHAP provides policy makers, health providers, and individuals with useful information on new ways to improve health as people age.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare memos, research summaries, and reports
  • Conduct Environmental scans
  • Support a range of data collection activities
  • Conduct Quantitative and Qualitative analysis
  • Engage in a range of administrative tasks
  • Conduct Literature reviews

REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Outstanding interpersonal, critical reasoning, analytic, and writing skills
  • Willingness to learn new computer skills and computer-based data analysis (e.g., EndNote, STATA)
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and the highest standards of responsible research
  • Comfort dealing with sensitive subject matter (e.g., sexuality, HIV/AIDS, etc.)
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently on multiple projects
  • Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program in a relevant field including—but not limited to—sociology, public policy, statistics, health studies, human development, biology, public policy, economics
